Behind the creative process: Creating Irish dance for Ireland Fashion Week @irelandfashionweek

An early improvisation from my creative process, exploring ideas for the opening performance of Ireland Fashion Week’s Damhsa Graduate Show.

When developing the performance, I proposed both a light shoe and heavy shoe piece. While we ultimately chose the softer, more ethereal light shoe choreography as the first half (the opening) of the show was based on “Light shoe” or “Soft shoe”, I wanted to explore how heavy shoe could express not only strength and intricate rhythm, but also elegance, fluidity and poise.

My approach to choreography always begins with the music.

I’ll listen to a piece once or twice, then allow myself to move without any expectation of creating something finished.

Where does the music invite a pause? A turn? A gesture? A breath?

Rather than beginning with eight bars to fill, I find the moments in the music that naturally inspire movement and build the choreography around them. The steps come later.

I’ve always believed that some of the most compelling moments in performance emerge through instinct, when movement is felt before it’s considered.

A small glimpse into the creative process behind what eventually makes its way onto the stage. by @theirishdanceprogramme

Introducing Madeleine Dale, professional Irish dancer and now a member of The Irish Dance Programme team.

I feel very lucky to have gotten to know Madeleine through dancing over the last few years. She is passionate, kind, incredibly hardworking and one of those people who is always willing to learn.

She also has that little bit of magic that is very difficult to teach. A natural ability, musicality and presence that makes you want to watch her when she performs.

Anything Madeleine has achieved has come from her own work ethic, curiosity and determination. I have simply been very fortunate to play a small part along the way and to watch her grow in confidence as a dancer.

For some of our younger dancers, I think Madeleine is such a lovely example of where all of those small things can lead. Strong fundamentals, consistency, a willingness to learn and a real love of performing can open so many doors.

I am delighted that she has now joined The Irish Dance Programme team. She has such a strong understanding of the fundamentals of excellent dancing and performance.
She has also begun her own professional dance journey, and I really think she is one to watch.

Madeleine very kindly wanted to share a little about her experience working with me, which meant a lot.

Very proud of you Madeleine, and very happy to have you as part of the team 🤍

Recovery after injury as a professional dancer @hyperice

A few things that genuinely helped me:

• Physio-led rehab + progressive loading
• Reducing impact, not stopping movement completely
• Prioritising sleep + nutrition for tissue repair
• Compression recovery after training + shows using the Hyperice Normatec Premier Legs
• Heat + cold exposure to manage stiffness + irritation
• Consistency with the basics over time

Looking back, the injury wasn’t sudden - it had been building for a while. This experience completely changed how I look after my body now.
