🏡 HOSTING HOME: JBG COMMUNITY MICROGRANT

Have an idea for a gathering but need a space to make it happen? James Black Gallery wants to help you bring it to life!

Hosting Home is a community microgrant program supporting individuals, collectives, clubs, and grassroots organizations to gather, share skills, make things, organize, learn, and spend time together.

Through the program, community hosts can access JBG's space and shared resources for FREE, with the option to request up to $100 in additional support for their gathering.

🌱 What can you host?

Anything from workshops, craft nights, reading circles, community screenings, performances, game nights, skillshares, fundraisers, and support gatherings to something we haven't imagined yet!

Both one-time and recurring gatherings are welcome.

🏠 What we offer:

Two indoor rooms, a kitchen, front and back gardens, AV equipment, tables and chairs, and access to our tool library and shared art materials (subject to availability). Our space is best suited for gatherings of around 20 people, with a maximum capacity of 40.

💌 Who is this for?

We especially encourage gatherings by and for communities facing barriers to affordable space, including queer and trans, BIPOC, Indigenous and Black, neurodivergent, Disabled and Mad, newcomer, and immigrant communities.

📅 Applications are open on a rolling basis until December 31, 2026.

Accessibility information and application details are available through the link in our bio.

If filling out a form isn't accessible to you, please email "board@thejamesblack.gallery" to arrange a phone call or in-person conversation.

We hope Hosting Home can make a little more room for the things you want to bring by @thejamesblackgallery

What an honor to have @countcupid as our figure model for our latest Hot Fruit Figure drawing session. Every pose was a visual feast, and it was so joyous to share space with such a skilled, embodied, and aligned drag artist. Thankyou Count Cupid! And thankyou to all the attendees!

If you see any of your drawings here please comment and we can tag you 🤩 by @thejamesblackgallery

Magsipalakpakan tayo for Vancouver’s first ½ ¼ Filipino art and zine fest 👏 . If you ever wore lens-less frames in your bygone swagapino era, if you ever learned to play Lemonade on the guitar, if you were ever in your tito’s living room with your entire extended family illegally streaming a Pacquiao fight, you’ll be among mga tropapips here.

I started making lidded jars as a small urn for a friend's pet and I now can't stop making them! I make them as closed form jars and they are so much fun to throw!

This one went to a friend who wanted to put some kitten treats 😸 🐱 in it and I have a few jars that are fresh out of the soda kiln and a possible jar that needs to be packed open as the lid is a bit stuck to the bottom 😅

This Sunday, October 11 we have our next figure drawing session with the one and only @countcupid!
(original photo of Count Cupid is by @currentlydre)

What if Eros and Dracula had a baby? The Valentinian vampire king of so-called Vancouver’s vibrant drag scene, Count Cupid is a proudly trans non-binary South Korean diaspora artist and glampy horror villain. Equal parts silly and scary, they’ve been haunting the city in their clubkid boots since 2019. Cupid likes long walks on the beach, dumplings, and deconstructing patriarchal ideas of binary masculinity.

We’re back again, cuties! We invite Butches and Femmes to join us on Thursday, October 22nd from 6:00pm to 10:00pm for spooky season fun at The James Black Gallery! There is a suggested donation of $5 dollars at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. This isn’t a costume event, but spooky attire is VERY encouraged.

We will be carving pumpkins (bring your own pumpkin and carving tools) and showing some vintage horror movie compilations. We will have a small handful of pumpkins provided for those who need a free pumpkin, let us know if you need one ahead of time! 🎃👻

We also have an extremely talented spiritual diva coming to do tarot readings on a sliding scale. The scale starts at $10 for a reading and goes up depending on how in depth you want your reading to be. We will have a limit of 3 subsidized readings on a first come first serve basis for folks unable to afford a reading! Please request these spots mindfully as tarot reading is a lot of emotional labour for our reader.

There will be Halloween candy provided. Please sign up if you’d like to bring a shareable food or drinks for the event so we don’t have too much food waste!

** Accessibility information: Unfortunately this venue is not wheelchair accessible. There are about 17 steps to get into the building from the street and 18 steps up to the bathrooms. There is a back garden area that could be potentially wheelchair accessible, weather permitting. This will not become a permanent venue for future events, as we hope to always be accessible to everyone. If you have accessibility needs for this event or future events please reach out and we will try our very best to accomodate.

*** Please note that this event is a closed space for those involved in the ButchFemme community and subculture. While we appreciate wider community support, our main priority is creating a safe and dedicated space for the ButchFemme community in Vancouver. by @thejamesblackgallery
