collecting is something i’ve always done — through objects, ideas, and inspiration.

japanese robots from the 1970s — jumbo machinders — continue to keep me curious. there’s something about their design, colour, and character that captures a sense of imagination you don’t often see anymore.

i don’t often have these guys all out at once, so when i did, i took the chance to capture a photo — a small moment that reflects a big part of my world.

For Part 2 of our McKILLOP* series we stepped into James Chan’s world: sneakers, toys, modernist furniture, a BMW E30, and a room full of pieces that each carry their own story.

We spoke about a decade of shared history, the discipline behind doing your best work, and why collecting is never really about the objects.

Our journal interview is now live.
