The James Theater & Heartland Yoga Welcome Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band to their Iowa City debut Monday July 13th, 7-9pm

Originally hailing from New Orleans and now based in Asheville, North Carolina, Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band have been blending ancient mantras with a rich tapestry of musical influences since their formation in 2005. Their music seamlessly integrates sacred chants from yoga traditions and beyond with elements of rock, blues, Celtic folk, gospel, and world grooves, creating a sound that resonates with a diverse audience.

The band’s debut album, Calling The Spirits, released in 2007, garnered attention for its innovative approach to mantra music. Subsequent albums, such as Unity, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart, and Mystery, recognized as one of Louisiana’s best albums by Offbeat Magazine, have further solidified their place in the global spiritual music scene.

Their work has been featured on Putumayo World Music compilations, and they made history as the first mantra-based band to perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

What to Expect at the Concert:
Attending a Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band concert is an immersive experience rooted in connection and presence. Their warm, inclusive shows invite the audience on a journey through music and chant—encouraging singing, dancing, and reflection. Blending soulful melodies with rhythmic grooves, the band creates an energetic, participatory atmosphere that fosters a genuine sense of community.

Whether you’re a long-time follower or new to their music, a concert with Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band offers a welcoming space to experience the transformative power of music and mantra.

“The much-beloved band evoke, conjure and celebrate that universally felt yet impossible-to-define essence that lies at the heart of all things, what Bob Marley once called “a natural mystic, flowing through the air.” — Alan DiPerna (Rolling Stone)  taken in Iowa City, Iowa by @thejamestheater

🚨ENGLERT X THE JAMES:

The Englert is proud to partner with The James Theater to bring acts to Iowa City that are better suited in a smaller space than our two-level theatre. 🎵 We had so much fun with you last week at Willi Carlisle, and we've got four more fantastic shows at The James this season. 🎤 The James is the perfect place to see emerging artists, experimental projects, local talent, and lower-volume musicians. 🎸 From blues to folk music, The James has much to offer. 🎟️ For tickets, video previews, and more information, visit englert.org/events. by @thejamestheater

It is our pleasure to introduce Grain Bin Operettas, the support act for Marisa Anderson. 🎻 Grain Bin Operettas is an experimental cellist of rural Iowa. 🌽 It was five years ago that curiosity willed her to crawl into the hatch of an abandoned grain bin with her cello.

In the deep, dark belly of corrugated steel she discovered a fascinating wonderland where sound and timbre are intensified beyond normal perception. 🔮 Devoid of visual context, the mind begins to synthesize new realities. 🧙‍♀️🌙 ✨️ In this magical space, chords build and swell like tidal waves and rile the mind into a state of ecstasy. 💫 The errant squeaks and slithering of a bow conjure a terrifying forest brimming with unseen creatures on a moonless night 🌃

Through experimentation with electrically altered cello, she can now share this heightened sensory experience with audiences. 🎵 See her performance live at The James Theater on June 21, in support of Marisa Anderson. 🎟️ Get tickets in advance at englert.org/events by @thejamestheater
