You are going to be okay friend…

This is a friendly reminder I wrote last night, inspired by a speech I heard from @malika_andrews

In her message she asked:
“Class of 2026, are you going to be okay?” And right after, she reassured the class: “I am confident you will be.”

Such a simple message, but one I think a lot of us may overlook.

IMO, graduation season can be one of the scariest times of the year for a lot of people because behind the gowns, celebrations, joy, and all the good stuff (rightfully so), there’s also a lot of fear, doubt, and uncertainty lingering in the minds of many graduates.

Because once you step outside of the “school bubble” and into this wild world, most people honestly have no idea what life has waiting for them. (And for those who know, know and remember that exact feeling when they graduated too)

And I think that reminder “you are going to be okay”, is one that someone will remember when:
- their application gets denied,
- they don’t get the internship,
- they lose an opportunity they worked so hard for,
or life simply doesn’t go the way they hoped.

There were lots of great lessons in her speech (I’ll share my full summary later), but this is the one that stood out to me the most and I hope every commencement speech we are about to hear will remind their respective graduation classes that “everything is going to be okay”.

Because sometimes that one reminder maybe exactly what someone needs to pull through one of the hardest moments of their life or any adversity they may face (and we all know those moments will come).

And honestly… this message goes beyond graduation too.

It’s something all of us can reach for on one of those difficult days too:

YOU ARE GOING TO BE OKAY FRIEND. 🙏🏾

And congrats to the Class of 2026.

As an “adopted Idahoan”, Colston’s story and the connection to Jay Harbaugh is always refreshing to talk about as it reminds all of us…
✅You can find the needle in the haystack
—If you look hard enough, you will find it.

✅Hard work does payoff but sometimes hard work with some evidence can go a little farther.
—Put your work on tape.

✅When your opportunity comes, maximize it to the best of your ability.
—And if you are the needle in the haystack, prove yourself and your finders right.

You are not behind…

I know, we all like to compare ourselves to others but don’t foget; the gift of comparison is a gift that will keep on giving until we choose to reject that gift. So again, you don’t have to compare yourself with others because…

You are not behind…

And if you really really can’t help yourself and feel the need to compare yourself to someone, at least let it be your future self. That’s the only person you are truly behind.

And here is the even better news. You will meet your future self tomorrow, and as long as you keep putting in the effort, time, commitment and doing the things you know you need to do, everything is going to be alright… so, again…

Replace the world “Africans” with “humans” for me…

And let me add, this is absolutely not applicable to every African and I also know this conversation spans beyond our African continent too.

Will be back to dive more into each of these later on but let me know your thoughts too…

The three things I wish “some” of us Africans 🌍would stop doing…

1. The idea that a “kid” shouldn’t be asking questions or be curious to ask…
Someone is alive today because
a “kid” asked a question…

2. Using the name of “God” to avoid important conversations…
God and our faith is relational, not some transactional/bargaining tool…

3. Forgetting that other people are also going through “life” stuff too…
Show up for other people too, especially the ones who show up for you too (and no, I am not
talking about money…)
