Two absolutely fantastic weekends reacqainting myself with the magical barn at Pilton, in Somerset. The barn that started my journey exploring Britain's historic barns and tithe barns.

It started with Lilith and Luke Piper's inspirational installation 'Inner Landscapes' and continued with the Summer Market the following weekend during the fallow year of @glastofest.

And look Harry! Your painting made it to the barn! Thank you so much for this very thoughtful gift.

If you missed these events, fear not. The barn is generally open in daylight hours for curious visitors and there'll no doubt be more events to look forward to in future.

And if you fancy reading more about this barn and many more, 'Tithe Barns' is still available from independent, high street and online retailers... Or... Book me for a talk! I can't stop talking about these buildings!

Earlier this month I took a wonderfully peaceful walk through the Gloucestershire countryside starting and ending at Kemble Station.

Along the way I came by this huge late 17th century barn at Church Farm, Coates and spoke to some lovely locals who were looking for Swifts flying in and out of it.

When I deliver talks on Tithe Barns, I always conclude by mentioning the legacy of the tithe barn. Like 'Station Road' or 'Mill Lane', there are plenty of references to former tithe barn buildings in the form of street names.

In Swindon, the Okus estate once had Okus Farm and apparently an impressive old, thatched barn was there until 1975. The area is now entirely residential, with 'affordable' housing as well as large detached properties overlooking the town centre.

Tithe Barn Crescent is just south of where the farm once stood. Was the large barn there a tithe barn?

First visit to @avebury_nt yesterday mainly to see the magnificent barn there, which now hosts the main ticket and reception desk.

Woodwork dates from late 13th century but it is thought the barn was constructed in its current form much later in 1690. It was one of two barns, the other burning down in 1945.

A Benedictine priory once existed on site.

You can find out more information about the site in the museum and of course admire the mystical standing stones circling the village.

When I first published Tithe Barns, I included a copyright free image taken from the book "A Cotswold Village" published in 1898. On page 72 the caption was simply "The Old Barn" and suggested it was located near the River Coln.

Ken, owner of the Great Barns website, got in touch to suggest that this was the Ablington Manor Barns and finally after 5 years, I decided to go and explore the Cotswolds and see the barns myself.

It's a match! One section has 1727 inscribed on the porch. Absolutely beautiful in the Easter sunshine.

Took a sneaky look at the tithe barn at Tidmarsh from the view of the adjacent footpath last week. The current and/or previous owner had published some information about it in 2014, stating it was built circa 1760 and possibly on the site of a medieval barn.

The grange at Tidmarsh served Reading Abbey.

According to estate agent listings, the converted barn sold in this century for approximately £1.5 million

Same barn... Different perspectives. Always fun to join a wedding fayre and bank ideas for a potential future venue. @uftonweddings hosted a number of classy and fun vendors on top of showcasing their lovely historic court and barn.

Brick built, with just a single porch and weatherboarding, the sixteenth century barn was once accompanied by stables and restored extensively in 1992.

Ufton Court's history stems from well beyond that, with a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086 and wooden beams with possible origins from 1474.

The site hosts school residential too with cabins and a small farm, including goats, pigs and chickens

This was as close as I could get to the tithe barn at Siddington, near Cirencester this afternoon. According to greatbarns.org.uk, the original barn's beams date from around 1245. The original barn being the 'higher' section, where the porch has been converted into a dwelling.

The lower half, still largely recognisable as a barn, was constructed later in the 18th century, possibly in place of part of the original barn.

Many Cotswold / Gloucestershire barns have this 'higher / lower' or 'older / newer' split barn arrangement, possibly related to changing farming practices, need for expansion or parts of barns being destroyed.

I'd often seen references to a tithe barn at Guiting Power online, but there's nothing I've found that conclusively identifies it as one.

Regardless, I went for a nose whilst passing through the Cotswolds this week. Its Grade II listing notes that the interior was not inspected. From what I can gather it is residential in use, possibly as bookable accommodation of some kind.

The listing also states 18th century origins.

I also noted that nearby Bourton-on-the-Hill has a 'tithe barn' that may have once been in Guiting Power before being moved. One to look into another time!

A rare photo with me next to a historic barn... The gargantuan Great Coxwell Tithe Barn near Faringdon, Oxfordshire.

When I first visited this one in 2019, it was getting dark and very overcast. A short drive from my current base in Swindon meant I could make use of the glorious weather and retake some of my photos!

Since I published the book, some historians have advised me that the Cistercian Monks at Beaulieu Abbey, who built the barn, would not have taken tithe payments, thus making it not a Tithe Barn. Try telling that to the National Trust... I remain on the fence!
