4 Habitats, and Conifers Lead the Way!

The Ecosystems of the Uinta Mountains of Utah are ever changing. 4 main Habitats are in constant flux. Conifers, tend to be the initial drivers of habitat turnover. They are prolific in their advance, but will inevitably be put in check by fire, changing the outcome, and starting the whole process over.

Tree Defects Can Come In Clusters! 🤔
Sometimes, trees groups or clusters can get infected and thereby weakened by the same disease. When this happens, most or all of the trees affected may become a risk to values.

More evidence that proactive management works to reduce not just the risk of, but the occurrence of high-severity wildfire while retaining an intact forest! 🌱
See link below 👇

Thanks to @afrc_forestry for bringing this to my attention.

### Wildfire Response and Personnel

- Approximately **3,124 personnel** are assigned to manage the 7 large fires across the state.
- This number excludes many local and agency government employees, landowners, forestland operators, and community members who are also actively contributing.
- The **Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF)** prioritizes **initial attack** efforts to keep wildfires small and manageable.

### ODF Educational Highlight

- ODF offers educational content explaining key wildfire management terms such as **building line** and **mopping up**.
- A video from the ODF Southwest Oregon District provides insight into these terms, the work being done, and the rationale behind these firefighting efforts.

### Weather Outlook

- Current conditions: Hot and dry with very strong north winds expected in the Okanagan Valley this afternoon and evening.
- Strong west winds will move through the Cascade gaps into the western Columbia Basin.
- Dry thunderstorms are forecasted for southeast Oregon, with wet storms in far northeast Washington.
- A significant wind shift is expected on Tuesday as high pressure replaces the departing low.
- East winds may affect the west Cascade foothills, mainly between Mt. Rainier and Mt. Bachelor.
- A thermal trough will cause instability from southwest Oregon up the Oregon Cascade west slopes to the Washington Cascade crest.
- Winds will ease on Wednesday, but instability will persist.
- From Thursday through the weekend, west general winds and onshore flow will dominate, especially through the Cascade gaps.
- Thunderstorms may return to eastern Oregon and near the Canadian border late next week and the following weekend.
- No significant rainfall is expected during this period.

### Fire Prevention Reminder

- Residents and visitors should check local fire regulations for the areas where they live, work, and recreate.
- It is crucial to follow all restrictions related to burning, equipment use, campfires, and other activities that could start wildfires to help prevent new fires.

Outdoor activities such as camping, hunting, hiking, and related sectors-including permitting, manufacturing, and associated services-contribute approximately $862 billion annually to the U.S. economy, making up nearly 2% of the national GDP and supporting 4.5 to 6.5 million jobs. This figure includes spending on equipment, travel, permits, and services, as well as the broader economic impact through job creation and tax revenue. The industry also generates significant tax revenue and supports both rural and urban communities nationwide.

What is the Northern Rockies Fire Science Exchange Network, and what does it mean to be a part Joint Fire Science Exchange Program?
Lets get into it... the Joint Fire Science Program @firesciencegov is jointly funded by the U.S.
Department of Interior @usinterior and the U.S. Forest Service @u.s.forestservice. JFSP provides leadership to the fire science community by identifying research needs to enhance the decision-making ability of fire, fuels, and natural resource managers, as well as others, to meet their management objectives. The JFSP also funds 15 Fire Science Exchange Networks across the country - including us!
Each region of the U.S. has their own exchange, tasked with facilitating the transfer of knowledge between researchers and managers, helping to make fire science accessible and relevant to decision-makers on the ground. In this capacity, the Northern Rockies Fire Science Exchange Network serves as a bridge between fire science and natural resource management in the Northern Rockies region.
Our exchange is administered through the University of Idaho’s department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences, as well as partners at the University of Montana, Montana State University, Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes and federal partners.

Brian “Hakiym” Simpson is a father, poet, and wildland firefighter.

In 2024, while off-duty, he was attacked and targeted with racial slurs by another firefighter.

Witnesses confirmed he acted in self-defense. Yet today, Hakiym is serving nearly 6 years in prison-while the other man, who admitted to starting the fight, remains free.

This story deserves to be seen and heard.

It raises bigger questions about fairness, accountability, and what happens when violence goes unchallenged-especially when it happens out of public view.

🌿🔥 Pyro-Therapy Gathering: Event Review
💚 Healing with Fire through Community Events
✨ Healing our sense of place
💔 Making space for grief
🌍 Remembering our connection🌱

I recently had the opportunity to attend a Community Pyro-Therapy Event.

Attending the gathering was a truly moving and unforgettable experience. 🌎
It was informative and inspiring, like all the events these folks put on. It was a great way to meet other community members and learn about fire, the land, and ourselves.

We came together in a space shaped by fire and renewal—a space where grief and growth, loss and life, can coexist side by side. We were reminded that fire, while devastating, also clears the way for new growth, fresh beginnings, and new life. In honoring the scars on the land, we can find permission to celebrate the scars within ourselves.

Throughout the day, we were invited to slow down, be fully present, and practice deep listening—to the earth, to our own bodies, and to each other. Healing wasn’t rushed or forced. It was about allowing, witnessing, and belonging again to the world around us.

Events like these can help us see that the Earth grieves and heals with us. The scent of charred wood, the whisper of the wind through blackened trees, the tender green shoots pushing through ash—all become sacred reminders: ✨ Beauty still rises. We still rise. ✨ No matter what we carry into the forest—grief, hope, fear, gratitude, or a mixture of all—we find ourselves welcomed, held, and supported by the land and one another.

Through the practice of pyro-therapy, we can reconnect not only with landscapes touched by wildfire but also with the parts of ourselves shaped by personal loss and transformation.

This Pyro-Therapy Gathering was a profound experience of remembrance, resilience, and hope.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to step into this healing space and to share in such a powerful collective journey. 🌿🔥

Special Thanks to Blake Ellis!
