A year ago I couldn’t run 500 feet without something hurting.

I’m a cyclist. Bikes make sense to me. Running on dirt, over roots, downhill, with my lungs on fire that didn’t.

So I kept showing up. Blackstar humbled me. Peters Canyon beat me up. And somewhere in there my legs stopped arguing.

Trail marathon, Saddleback, November 7. No idea if I’m ready. That’s kind of the point.

Commitment is showing up and giving everything you have. Not the minimum. Not what’s expected. Everything.

I’m not 100% of what I once was, and I’ve learned to stop caring about that. I don’t quit. 200 miles on a bike. A 70.3 with damn near no swimming experience. Going from running 500 feet and hurting to finding out just how far I can push when my body is telling me to stop.

I’m not chasing medals. I’m chasing life. New challenges. New limits. New versions of myself.

I want my kids to understand that limitations are just scars you learn how to move forward with. And I want other veterans to know that you can still build, compete, suffer, evolve, and find something worth chasing again even with the shit you carry.

Because the grit and mindset we built can be dangerous when you finally point it toward a purpose.

Shoutout to @a5apcharlie for getting me onboard for this next challenge. And @antoniozanellato_ our crazy-ass trainer who apparently believes suffering is a personality trait. Guy is next level.

This event was created to push people into the uncomfortable to do something different.

This isn’t your average group ride. It’s meant to make you work harder, dig deeper, and find out what you’re capable of. But the goal is still to get everyone through it.

Tomorrow, OC TUFF begins a new chapter of what I hope becomes a yearly event with crazier, harder, and more challenging versions to come.

We’ll have two cycling groups tomorrow to make sure everyone completes the bike leg on time. The goal is for everyone to start the run together.

I’ll have water and refreshments at the start/finish, but you are responsible for your own hydration and fueling during the bike and run. Come prepared.

For those training for an Ironman, this is a perfect opportunity to see where you stand, test your pacing, and learn how your body responds under fatigue.

For those simply looking to step up, get uncomfortable, and push a little further beyond your threshold this is it.

Raffles at the end. Good people. Good times.

One wrong turn is all you need sometimes.

Hear me out.

On Tuesday, I had a prescribed training session. I was going hard, deep in the zone, completely in flow… and I took a wrong turn.

By the time I noticed, I was already too deep. Way off course. And going back meant climbing another insane hill.

So this time, I decided to let it be. (Normally my ego kicks in and I have to be “HARD” and go back to prove something)

Forget the route. Forget the plan.

Just enjoy the ride.

Funny enough, that one wrong turn ended up leading into one of the best days I’ve had in a long time.

Projects moved forward. One got completed. A new listing came in. Another listing that had been giving me headaches suddenly became clear to close.

And somehow, two unexpected checks showed up too.

But the best part?

I had gotten enough work done that I had time to take the twins up to Top of the World, hike with them, and catch an incredible sunset together.

And standing up there made me think…

We spend so much of our lives following the route.

The schedule. The training plan. The business plan. The next meeting. The next goal. The next thing that needs to get done.

Always moving. Always trying to get somewhere faster.

And sometimes we get so focused on staying on course that we forget to actually live the life we’re working so hard to build.

Not every wrong turn needs to be corrected.

Sometimes you just keep going.

Sometimes you trust where it takes you.

And sometimes that wrong turn ends up taking you exactly where you needed to be.

Balance isn’t found.

It’s earned.

P.S. I also somehow ended up showing a $25M house to a future 49er. 😎😂

My client just got signed by the 49ers.

Super humble guy. Apparently he’s pretty athletic too.

We were talking about hobbies and I told him I’m into cycling and MTB. He casually mentioned he plays a little football, so naturally I told him he should come ride with us sometime. I think with some training he could probably keep up.

He also pulled up in this McLaren wrapped in 49ers colors. I guess when you first get signed they give you a company car or something. Pretty cool perk.

I asked what position he plays and he said wide receiver. I don’t really follow football like that, but from what I understand his job is basically to run fast and catch the ball.

I gave him some advice: just keep your eye on the ball. Fundamentals.

He told me he once caught a ball ONE-HANDED, after doing some kind of flip, stayed in bounds and scored a touchdown. I told him that’s cool, but until you’ve unclipped from an MTB at 25 mph while going over the bars, we’re talking about two very different levels of athleticism.

Anyway, great kid. Wishing Debian(or Dijon ) Love the best with the 49ers. Hopefully he makes the team. 🙏🏼

I told him if football doesn’t work out, I can get him a bike and he can join The Peña Project.

Always good to have a backup plan.

Now waiting for the offer on this $25,000,000 New Port coast home I showed him. He needed gas money as his 49er check has not clear so I hope I get my $1,000 back. taken in Newport Beach, California by @thejppena

THE TACO RIDE

What an epic adventure. What started as a crazy challenge I wanted to take on turned into finding another group of crazy individuals willing to do it with me. And what a group!

I can’t wait to share the full video. I’m still not sure how @saulcycles is alive after clocking in over 200+ miles leaving his home in Santa Monica at 10 p.m., arriving at my house in Irvine by 2:30 a.m., and then riding with us all the way to Mexico. But that’s the kind of insanity that made this group unique. Everyone had the type of grit needed to take on this crazy ride.

Although things changed once we crossed the border and our driver bailed on us, the adventure was epic. And with great friends thanks to Alejandro and Enrique the journey was spectacular.

Well worth the ride for a good taco! 🌮

Can’t wait to run it back next year. Shoutout to the crew. This is definitely just the start of even crazier rides.
