The second installment of POETRY X___, will be an in-person writing workshop centering a prompt inspired by From the Inside, a collaborative exhibition organized by The Judith Center and Just Detention International featuring nearly one hundred works by individuals who have experienced trauma behind bars, including those who have been subjected to sexual abuse while incarcerated. Inviting participants to draft poetry in dialogue with the artwork on view, the workshop will be followed by readings of poetry developed during the event.
Founded in 1980, Just Detention International is a health and human rights organization dedicated to ending sexual abuse in all forms of detention. JDI is the only organization in the United States—and globally—focused exclusively on addressing sexual abuse behind bars. Its work includes holding government officials accountable for prisoner rape, challenging the cultural and institutional conditions that allow sexual violence to persist, and ensuring that survivors have access to the support and resources they need. #justdetentioninternational #sexualabuseawareness #sexualabuse #prisonerrights taken in The REEF L.A. by @thejudithcenter

We are excited to share that Book Club Session 05 will take place on Wednesday, October 21, from 7-8:30 PM at The Judith Center in person and on Zoom! Building on our earlier examination of the work of Firestone, this meeting will feature Airless Spaces (1998), Firestone’s first and only work of fiction. Following the critical success of her first book, The Dialectic of Sex (1970), Firestone became disenchanted with the radical feminist movement she had helped establish in New York and withdrew from it, returning instead to the visual arts practice she had begun as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Over the following decade, her life became increasingly unstable as she experienced repeated psychiatric hospitalization, culminating in a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia in 1987.

The second and final book published in her lifetime, Airless Spaces offers vignettes conjuring the complications and indignities rife within the bureaucracy of mental institutions, informed by Firestone’s own experiences. Following our previous discussion of Sylvère Lotringer’s investigation of “insanity” as a relational dynamic and a classification through which individuals are subjected to control in Mad Like Artaud (2015), we will further consider how mental institutions can subjugate the very patients they purport to cure. In her fictional prose, Firestone insists on the profound humanity of the patients confined within these “systems of care,” a recognition too often withheld from those deemed mentally ill. We are excited to welcome renowned writer and novelist Chris Kraus as the session’s guest speaker. Kraus is co-editor of Semiotext(e), which recently reissued Airless Spaces with a new introduction by Kraus. Participants are encouraged to read Kraus’s text as well as Emmeline Clein’s essay “Never a Patient Woman” (2025). The Judith Center, 1933 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90007

Metered parking or a $15 lot nearby. Message for Zoom link.

Inside-Out: Standing in a Threshold
A conversation + release event at Printed Matter
September 15, 6–8pm

I’ll be joined by Frédéric Tcheng, Michael Joo, and Kathryn Andrews for a conversation around Inside-Out and the question at the center of the artwork: How do we remain connected across distance, time, absence, and difference? Rather than treating connection as metaphor, the work approaches it as something lived, material, and sustained through attention, exchange, and care.

The artists gathered in Inside-Out were invited because, in different ways, their practices make connection visible, felt, or operative.

The publication is both a container for twelve individual artistic practices and the site in which a larger artistic practice unfolds: relation itself.

Developed between 2024 and 2026, Inside-Out consists of twelve individually authored risograph-printed booklets. Eleven were developed through extended exchanges with invited artists, filmmakers, writers, and cultural practitioners, alongside Halpern’s own booklet: Dana Hoey, Frédéric Tcheng, Michael Joo, Keltie Ferris, Sara VanDerBeek, Craig Kalpakjian, Robert Janitz, Anna Ostoya, Prem Krishnamurthy, Liz Magic Laser (in collaboration with Cori Kresge), and Kathryn Andrews/The Judith Center (with contributions by Warren Neidich and Linda Vallejo).

Design: @darling_green_studio
Printed by: @txtbooks
Photography: @joerglohse

Very excited to finally bring the twelve booklets together and into the world.

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 5–8 PM, we will host an open house for From the Inside, a special exhibition presented in partnership with Just Detention International (JDI) featuring nearly one hundred works by individuals who have experienced trauma behind bars, including those who have been subjected to sexual abuse while incarcerated. The exhibition with JDI foregrounds personal testimony and creative expression, bringing visibility to voices that are too often excluded from public and cultural discourse.

Founded in 1980, JDI is a health and human rights organization dedicated to ending sexual abuse in all forms of detention. JDI is the only organization in the United States—and the world—that focuses exclusively on addressing sexual abuse behind bars. Their work includes holding government officials accountable for prisoner rape, challenging the cultural and institutional conditions that allow sexual violence to persist, and ensuring that survivors have access to the support and resources they need.

It was a pleasure to bring our Los Angeles arts community together for this year’s APAA Summer Salon. Featuring a conversation between artist and Judith Center founder Kathryn Andrews and artist Tala Madani, the discussion explored the barriers deeply embedded within our institutional networks that shape artistic careers, particularly in relation to gender and power. It was lovely to gather gallerists, advisors, and curators to foster greater awareness of the imbalances that persist within our industry, and to consider how we can be more intentional and proactive in our work.

Thank you to @the_apaa, @thekathrynandrews, @thejudithcenter, @talamadani, and @ceciliadan for helping bring this event to life, and to all of our colleagues who joined us and contributed such thoughtful insights.

This Saturday was the launch of From the Inside, an art exhibition co-presented by JDI and The Judith Center, featuring works by incarcerated artists.

It was amazing to see so many JDI supporters as well as family and friends of the artists featured, who all came out to see first-hand the incredible courage and creativity on display.

A huge thank you to The Judith Center for partnering with us to shine a light on the resilience of people behind bars. Incarcerated people deserve dignity and respect, and it was an honor to celebrate their stories in this way.

If you’re Los Angeles, you can still see From the Inside in person. The exhibition will be on view until November 21. Please email The Judith Center at info@thejudithcenter.org to schedule a viewing. by @thejudithcenter
