Three months ago, I got the opportunity to create a room I had been thinking about for a long time.

I wasn’t sure who would come, what the first gathering would feel like, or whether the idea would grow beyond a single session.

Today, on June 3, which feels like the perfect day to share this milestone, @micandmind_ has successfully hosted three intimate and beautiful gatherings.

Every person who has registered, attended, subscribed, shared a post, invited a friend, or stepped up to perform has helped shape what MIC & Mind is becoming. Thank YOU.

And if there’s one thing these past three months have taught me, it’s that there is a real need for spaces where creatives can gather, share their work, exchange ideas, and find community.

So here’s to the next three months 🥂

Weekend dump

Been hitting my monthly goals for gym. Been consistent, rain and sun. Weekend started on Friday, at the gym.

Currently a 4 on my progress level of how to use chopsticks.

The laundromat in my area opens at 9 AM. If you want to do your laundry yourself, and leave on time, you have to get there by 7 AM before they open.

Been having a hell of a mold disturbance, heightened due to the rain. Finally got a dehumidifier to at least give me time to solve the issue or move out. Adulting 10,000, JN 1

I BUY OLD BATTERIES

Juliet Nnaji is a Nigerian writer, spoken word poet, and storyteller.

Her poetry has served as a bridge between cultures through the WO2WA (West Oakland to West Africa) Renshi Poetry Exchange, between West Oakland, California, and Lagos, Nigeria.

Her essays have appeared in The Republic, More to Her Story, Black Ballad Uk, Brittle Paper, among others.

She is the founder and Creative Director of Mic & Mind, a close knit open mic and creative gathering that makes room for creatives to share their work in an intimate setting. Through Mic & Mind, she is building a creative community that holds people, including herself, long enough for their work to grow.

Yesterday, we introduced After the Mic: Letters from the Community to our newsletter subscribers.

After the Mic is an extension of Mic & Mind, a room outside the room, somewhere our words can continue living between gatherings.

Every time I go to the movies, there’s a guy who works the elevator at the cinema I go to. Lately, I’ve been going quite often, enough that we recognize each other now. Between the ground floor and the second, we have the same small conversation: hello’s and hi’s, what movie are you seeing today, how’s your day going, how’s the weather; every sentence comes with a smile.

Last weekend, I was running late for my movie. I was fidgety and didn’t have the patience for our usual chitchat. After the movie, I found him waiting at the elevator as always. This time, we learned each other’s names.

I walked away smiling, thinking, I should bring him something the next time I come.

I am not attracted to him. I don’t want anything beyond those brief moments before and after a movie.

So… too much?

Ironically, the movie I had just seen was Call of My Life. At one point, the protagonist, Soluchi (Uzoamaka Power), is accused by her lover, Kalu (Zubby Michael), of caring too much, loving too much, doing too much.

I have spent most of my life wondering whether I make too much room for people in my heart. So when Kalu said those words, and I watched them break Soluchi, I felt my own chest tighten.

Later, my friend Amy offered me a different way of thinking about it and listening to her voice note (9th slide), I found myself thinking…

What if “too much” is really a question of capacity?

A one litre cup cannot hold two litres of water. Which simply means the cup doesn’t have the capacity to hold what you’re pouring into it, even when it’s poured with love.

Because Eli (Andrew Bunting) enters the story, and suddenly the very things that were called “too much” in one relationship become the things that are cherished in another.

Back to the elevator…

The next time I go to that cinema, I’ll probably bring him that little gift. Because for a few minutes, we become part of each other’s day, and sometimes, that’s reason enough to return a little warmth. by @thejulietnnaji
