Recovery movements are a key part of footwork that show up in almost every aspect of goalkeeping.

Many keepers struggle with how and when to use them.
Some don’t use them at all.
Some use them too late.
Some lean backwards, causing their technique—whether it’s a touch, pass, or save—to suffer.
…and many more.

In a proper recovery, you’ll see short, quick steps backward—sometimes even a quick crossover—while the keeper stays forward on their toes.

For shot stopping, you’ll also see hands ready and eyes locked on the ball.

Used properly, recovery movements can:
• Create better space and passing lanes for teammates
• Improve spacing and angles when preparing for a shot

In passing situations, the keeper will be more upright—but still forward and active on their toes. Their head should be on a swivel, scanning for passing and first-touch options as they call for the ball.

When recovering for a shot, the keeper’s eyes are locked on the ball while reading the attacker. As the shooter begins to “cock” their leg, that’s the cue to get set—body weight forward, hands ready, eyes focused.

The goal of recovery for shot stopping is simple:
Get into the best position as quickly as possible, while being ready to get set at any moment—even if it’s not perfect positioning.

At the end of the day, recovery movements connect everything.

Train the recovery—not just the save.

If you were a fly on the wall (yes… that brick wall over there) in our keeper sessions, you’d hear a lot of
“Nice feet”
“Good feet”
or even just…
“Feet!” after a “simple” basket catch or contour save.

But what does that actually mean?
Is it a compliment? A critique?

We harp on footwork constantly. Lateral, diagonal, forward, backward—these movements often make or break a goalkeeper (among other things).

The footwork of a goalkeeper—quick, sharp, explosive—is the foundation of all saving ability.
A big philosophy of mine is this:
If you don’t have to dive, don’t dive.

Sure, diving looks prettier, more athletic, more highlight-worthy.

BUT a keeper who lacks footwork—and one who frequently dives when they don’t HAVE to—is hurting themselves and their team. If you’re diving for shots you could stay on your feet for, you may not be ready when the big save is actually needed.

A keeper who uses quick footwork to get their body behind the ball and secure it upright is:
• Playing smarter, not harder
• Helping their team create quicker transition opportunities

When a save looks “simple,” it’s usually because the feet did the work.

…and it’s all about the feet.

So, is “Good feet” a compliment around here?

YOU BETCHA!

Everyone loves a diving save…
but the best goalkeepers make the game look simple.

Clean handling means no rebounds, no panic, and no extra work for your defense. It’s quiet, controlled, and efficient—and that’s what makes it so effective.

Don’t overlook the basics. Train clean handling every day.

Goalkeepers know… the real work starts before team training

Clean drop steps.
Sharp feet.
All out on the dive.

Building habits before the first shot.

A crowd favorite for working on 1v1s

4 Goals. 4 Keepers. LOTS of Saves.

Catch my whiffs at the end and the accountability my GKs provide 🤦🏼‍♀️😅
