I showed up to Heavy Metal on Saturday with the intention of doing some deadlifts. Instead I ended up trying some Strong Man lifts for the first time.

I walked into Heavy Metal on July 11th, 2025. I was 12 weeks post op having had a hysterectomy and just a few weeks earlier I tried to return to my Muay Thai gym and my body, very loudly, told me to f*ck off.

Since starting at the gym, I’ve been working on 3 lifts; bench press, deadlift and squat. This past Saturday was my first time trying out Strong Man lifts. I won’t lie, I’ve been intimidated by these lifts since day one, but I finally did it anyway ☺️♥️💪🏾

The last couple of year have seemed like an ongoing train wreck that I’m trying to take in stride. Through the whole of 2024 I was firing on all cylinders. My mind was clear and focused. My body was the best it had ever been. My Muay Thai was even showing improvement. I didn’t have as many fight opportunities as I would have liked to, but when I did fight, I felt like I belonged and I knew I deserved to be there. I was finally getting comfortable showing up as a fighter. Then 2025 hit me like a sledgehammer right to the chest and I’m still not fully recovered.

I’ve ALWAYS been an athlete. Whether or not I was good at any of the sports I’ve participated in is neither here nor there. What matters is that I showed up and worked hard. I didn’t just work hard to be good at a sport, I worked on my metal strength, I worked on my attitude and most importantly, I worked on being coachable.

2026 is the year I let go of trying to ‘get back to who I was’ and I start accepting who I am now and looking forward to who I will become. Change is hard and I’m sad and I’m scared. I’m also excited for what comes next.

1. I don’t have regrets. That doesn’t mean I haven’t made mistakes or poor decisions. It means that I made the best decisions for myself that I could with the information I had at the time.

2. I don’t tell lies. If you ask me a question, be prepared for the truth. This is something that I’ll never understand about our societal norms. Lying is weird, but people do it all the time. I don’t consider myself brutally honest because I don’t believe the truth has to be delivered in a brutal way. But I will always tell the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.

3. I don’t have a bucket list. It sounds strange but there’s usually very little time that passes between my deciding that I want to do something and actually doing it. I truly believe that life is short and that belief is reflected in the way I live.
