The story of how the Lab got started. Always humbling to look back at why we started and how we started. Fueled from the failures as a player, and a sense of duty to try and help athletes the community I grew up in. The vision has, is, and always will be to be the best. It’s what we work everyday towards. So that we can help baseball players in our community be their best #labbuilt by @thelab.bsb
Big leaguers don't play year-round, but we expect 11-year-olds to. The World Series is over and pros are heading into the offseason: recovery, reevaluating where they're at, getting ready for next season. Meanwhile an 11-year-old can play 100 games across 12 months with no break and no time to reflect on where he needs to improve. Rest, play another sport, or stay in baseball if that's his choice. Just make sure there's time to train and build physical skills. Send this to a parent planning their kid's winter. #baseball #youthbaseball #baseballparents #middleschoolbaseball #offseason #baseballtraining #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
A like and a DM from a college coach is not recruiting. Justin Johnson has a client who gets them every day. Big schools. Camp invites. So he texts the coach directly. Hey, do you know this guy? The answer: Who? A lot of camps are revenue for the coaching staff. Know the difference before you pay for one. Send this to a baseball parent. by @thelab.bsb
One guy runs a 6.7 sixty and a 4.3 to first. Another runs a 6.9 and a 4 flat. Which one plays faster? Justin Johnson: straight-line speed and game speed are not the same thing. Time to first matters more to him. Metrics help a coach zero in on you. There's a lot more to it than your metrics. Send this to a teammate. by @thelab.bsb
The most expensive things you buy this winter might do the least. F: Fall tournaments with a random travel team. You're largely wasting your time. D: College camps. Makes sense if you're a junior or senior actually getting recruited. Younger than that, it's time and money. C: Lessons. Depends more on you than the coach. Go in with something specific and take something home to build on. S: A gym membership. S: A full training block. A full assessment, a plan, and tracking your progress. Send this to a parent getting ready to invest in their high school player. #baseball #baseballtraining #youthbaseball #highschoolbaseball #baseballparents #offseason #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
Things I saw college reward and punish. S tier: being organized, and communicating with your professors. F tier: not taking care of your nutrition. It catches up to you. Send this to a teammate who has an F tier habit. #collegebaseball #highschoolbaseball #baseball #studentathlete #baseballtraining #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
The Brewers' hitting coach said it: have a plan and stay stubborn to it. Junior year of college I hit .216 thinking about mechanics in the box. Senior year I hit .293 with a plan, trusting my swing. Send this to a teammate who walks up there with no plan. #brewers #worldseries #baseball #hitting #collegebaseball #highschoolbaseball #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
The boys are building for spring 💯 Week 3 of the fall block. Want to train with us? Follow along or hit the link in bio. #baseball #baseballtraining #youthbaseball #bakersfield #thelab #playerdev #playerdevelopment #hitting by @thelab.bsb
A D1 logo on your Instagram doesn't get you drafted. Playing does. Justin Johnson: you can sit at a D1 for two years. Or go D2, hit .340 with 27 home runs, and be an All-American. Those guys get drafted all the time. Send this to a senior picking a school. #baseball #collegerecruiting #bakersfield #baseballparents #playerdevelopment #youthbaseball by @thelab.bsb
Meet Coach Nick. Four years of D1 at CSUB, and now he coaches at The Lab. His jump from .216 to .293 came from having a plan for every session and executing it, not from hitting more balls. Send this to a teammate who wants to play D1. #baseball #collegebaseball #d1baseball #highschoolbaseball #csub #bakersfield #hitting by @thelab.bsb
Stop trying to swing up to hit the ball in the air. Lift comes from where you make contact. How to check yourself: film a few swings from the side and pause at contact. If the ball is getting caught even with your front hip or deeper, the barrel is still working down. Those balls end up on the ground no matter how hard you try to lift them. Get the contact point out front, flush the baseball, and let the finish go high. The swing works up on its own. Send this to a hitter who keeps hearing "swing up." #baseball #hitting #hittingcoach #baseballtraining #swingmechanics #youthbaseball #highschoolbaseball #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
The Brewers focus on a deeper contact point. Catching the ball deeper gives them adjustability in the swing and more time to make better decisions. Most high school hitters do the opposite. They cheat everything out front and leave themselves zero margin. Control your contact point and you'll cover more pitches. Send this to a hitter who keeps hearing "hit it out front." #baseball #hitting #brewers #worldseries #highschoolbaseball #bakersfield by @thelab.bsb
