Between our final rehearsal and the day we went into the studio I spent a whole night writing this piece, and ode to my girls @iwantjube Evangeline and Layla. A matter of days after we recorded this, we tragically lost our deal Layla to medical complications, long before I even got the raw tapes back from the studio. For a long time it looked like we might shelve the song entirely as it was nearly impossible to listen to, let alone try and perform. With time, that pain became a melancholy memory of times too short lived, and while I’m sure it will still be difficult, I look forward to presenting this and a whole collection of music live for the first time at the @markhamjazzfestival this Saturday - we’ll be playing the beer garden exploring the story and history of the @eighthstreetorchestra through new music. Come join us at this stellar spectacle of a festival, a free weekend of Jazz with an emPHAsis on the original. I’ve been back for a minute now but on the go so much I haven’t been able to process what an amazing 10 days I had in New Orleans - I got to play some legendary venues with some artists I’ve been listening to since I was little, and had the opportunity to work one on one with @mileslions and get more grounded in the NOLA tuba tradition while exploring more of the modern territory covered today’s sousaphonist!
I wanted to take a moment again to gratefully acknowledge the support of the Chalmers Family Fund administered by the Ontario Arts Council, and hope to be back in NOLA soon!

Four weeks ago I was working on this song with my dear little one before we lost her too soon and too suddenly.
Last night I played my first show since she passed and I felt this was the best way I could pay tribute to my little girl and the joy she brought into our lives.
Tonight we’ll be having a family celebration with the Eighth Street Orchestra where we’ll be playing a song I wrote for Layla and her sister for the first time since we recorded it in the studio last month and the first time since her passing. We’ll be celebrating life and the history of the monolith that is the @eighthstreetorchestra in an intimate and acoustic setting, and I implore you to join us for this novel experience in a world of ever-quickening paces and every growing noise, join us for a quiet moment of reflection and celebration at Johnny G’s Cafe in Cabbagetown and be regaled by tales of the band or regale us with stories of your own; it’ll be a grand old time as I celebrate yet another once around the ol’ solar sphere on a much less grand scale than past years, but in an equally meaningful way, as we toast to years gone, years to come, friends gone, and friends to come.

Huge thanks to the @ontarioartscouncil for their support via the Chalmer’s Professional Development program, supporting my studies in New Orleans over the coming days.
Barely a day into my trip and I’ve already had so many fantastic opportunities to sit down and chat and play alongside phenomenal artists who live and breathe the musical culture I have the distinct pleasure to champion in Ontario and across Canada.
This is certainly a, but not THE grant acknowledgement post, but I wanted to share my overwhelming gratitude to the Ontario Art Council just for what little I have experienced and learned so far on my pilgrimage. This trip has been make possibly wholly through their support, and I am excited to learn more and bring that knowledge and experience back to Ontario.
