our first October market is this Sunday, 10/11, from 11-4! we’ll have our usual stickers (including the famous booties! BOO-ties??), cyanotypes, and upcycled tees, plus a couple spooky seasonal designs (swipe for a hint: ✨the skin of a killer✨)

we’ll be joined by some truly wonderful shops, local artisans, and makers, slinging everything from candles to vintage clothes to artisan pickles. i’d love to see you there!

did i fail a bunch of times? sure did! and that’s okay!

i was looking forward to adding some bookmarks to my product catalog, but unfortunately i just left these out in the sun waaayyy too long. the UV ate through all of the botanicals and really only registered the most opaque elements. but that’s something i’ve never done before! usually i’m gun-shy when it comes to exposure times, so i’m glad i experimented and learned how to identify when it’s TOO far gone.

as an artist, i think one of the most important skills you can build is a growth mindset. without that, you’ll obsess over every aspect of your art, picking it apart and trying to make it “perfect,” and end up making basically nothing you’re happy with, sometimes for years upon years. ask me how i know 🙃

this proof of concept helped me visualize what my bookmark project might look like. it gave me a low-stakes way to experiment with different designs, and i do love all of these ideas! i’ll buy some more watercolor paper and try again. i think i’m kinda onto something with these designs (particularly that Bodice Ripper one, i think she can get even spicier 👀👀).

As you’ve probably noticed, we’re more than a little #cyanotype -obsessed here at Lavender Panic 🤓 here’s are all of the one-of-a-kind pieces I created this June!

Of course, I took heavy inspiration from the combination of queerness and nature, celebrating the important place we hold in the natural world and nature as an inherent aspect of queerness.

Cyanotype dyeing really feels like alchemy to me. You harness chemicals that exist in nature, bend them to your will, and combine them with botanical resources to bring a one-of-a-kind artistic assemblage to life. Plus, watching the colors change at every phase of the process only to brilliantly come alive after rinsing with water just feels like sorcery in the best way.

I’m very much still perfecting my process, and this medium has been a wonderful exercise in letting go of perfectionism and just enjoying and respecting the art I create exactly as it is, “perfect” or not. This has been a long journey for me! If anyone has any tips on beating perfectionism as an artist, I would love to hear them, so please please leave them in the comments!

Most of these designs are one-of-a-kind, and thankfully most of them went to their forever homes in June! The remaining designs can be shopped at @quincecoffeehouse in Denver for the rest of the summer.

i had the absolute best time at @manicpixiedreammarketco yesterday! cannot wait for the rest of their markets this summer!! it’s taken me a while to find the over-the-top alt fashion girlies (gender neutral) since moving to CO, and Manic Pixie Dream Market felt like coming home to a community again ☺️ thank you all for coming out, to both my beloved old friends and all the new friends i met too!! my heart is so full ☺️💖🌟

what an honor
what a privilege
what a gift it is
to be an eternal work in progress 🌱🌷💐

this piece has lived in my heart since probably 2022. i had only just started to acknowledge that the life i had built was killing me; slowly at first, then all at once. i felt this illustration blossoming within me as i began the mortifying existential experience of shedding the layers that had cocooned me in other people’s expectations. fervent like the incessant whisper in the dark that insists - seemingly against all evidence - that things can get better, that hope is not a fool’s errand, that we can still find genuine optimism and joy, regardless of what else we’re up against.

as a queer, disabled, neurodivergent woman who only began living into the abundance of these labels in my mid 30s, i consider it a victory to be blooming again into my next form, because it means i’m still here to continue evolving.

while i intended for this illustration to speak to those of us who discover our true selves in our own time, “still blooming” is also a reminder that no human is fully complete. we are constantly evolving, constantly becoming, constantly blooming - and what a gift that is.
