A few facts about one of the most elusive birds around ~ the Kingfisher.

- Also known as the "Blue Arrow". The Kingfisher’s feathers don’t actually contain any blue pigment. The microscopic structure of their feathers scatters light to create that incredible colour.

- They have a transparent third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, which protects their eyes when diving underwater. Basically bird swimming goggles.

- If you want to grab a shot of one of these amazing animals. Look for logs or fallen trees resting over slow running water. Stay low, quiet and avoid pestering them or frightening them off.

- Rather than building a conventional nest, they excavate a tunnel into a riverbank to raise their young.

- Kingfishers are highly territorial, with individuals often defending a stretch of river all for themselves. This limited amount of them makes them tricky to track down.

- The first sign that one is nearby is a very high but little ‘peep’ sound as they fly past. However, they often move very quickly and quietly.

Have you ever managed to photograph or see one? 📷

Rising early to see what wildlife I could see in the forest meadows and came across a down of hares grazing and running around.

Make it to the end to see the eclipse passing below the horizon as the sun and moon set.

I really love the effect of these small strands of hair that are falling from the beak of this black kite.
