AFTER DARK

When the light disappears, another world begins.

The streets grow quiet—or come alive.
Shadows stretch. Windows glow.

Secrets surface. Dreams take shape.
The familiar becomes strange.

After Dark is an invitation to photograph what emerges when daylight gives way to something else.

We are looking for images born from the hours of darkness, but also from the places that darkness can take us: mystery, intimacy, solitude, desire, uncertainty, freedom, memory, and transformation.

What do you see when no one is looking?
What comes alive in the shadows?
What exists just beyond the edge of the light?

We invite photographers to interpret After Dark freely and personally. Literal, abstract, surreal, documentary, conceptual, experimental, and poetic interpretations are all welcome.

Show us what the dark reveals.

What happens when the sun sets and the world shifts?

We’re looking for photography that explores the mood, mystery, and visual narratives of the night. From neon-lit streets and quiet twilight landscapes to deep shadow play and nocturnal solitude—show us what you see After Dark.

Our Darkroom Processing Class is coming up at the end of the month, and we’d love to have you. Shoot a roll, bring it in, and we’ll walk you through everything — loading film, mixing chemicals, pulling your very first prints under the safelight.

No experience? No problem. Just bring a roll of exposed film and a willingness to slow down and make something with your hands.

“I was beginning to understand that others, scholars, poets, and artists, had come before me to honor these mountain communities, but I wanted to do my part as a photographer.”
-Aluka Berry

C. Aluka Berry spent six years documenting communities across North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Affrilachia: Testimonies is the result: a stunning 11×11 hardcover collection of photographs, poems, and historical essays honoring Black communities in southern Appalachia.
