This book is nothing like any non-fiction I've ever read (not that I read a lot of non-fiction, anyway). But honestly, it was fun, informative, and neither monotonous nor overly 'strict' in the healthy sense. It's just something I could finish reading without getting bored!

Not gonna lie, I was extremely sceptical about this book, but a few pages in, it mentioned that it was meant for Indians between 30–50 years of age. And, as you can guess, my immediate reaction was, then why am I reading this? A few lines down, though, it said, "If you're in your twenties, it will help you prevent mistakes." Guess who was hooked instantly?

The best part about this book was how deeply rooted it was in Indian methodologies and lifestyles. Take, for instance, The Great Indian Toilet Tragedy or Sharma Ji's Son Syndrome. The book has equal parts humour and information, which meant I was laughing one moment and sitting straight up on my bed the next, thinking, I need to get my life together.

Another plus point is the research. It's crazy detailed, India-appropriate, and genuinely interesting. And being someone who enjoys learning random facts, this was right up my alley. I ended up loving this book far more than I'd initially expected!

There are books readers understand, and then there are books that understand their readers. Avni Doshi's The First House was the latter.

The female protagonist's husband walks in one day and decides to end their marriage. And her reaction is something that would be considered only 'normal' given the circumstances, but the way it has been portrayed is something that is so rooted in reality and is nothing less than practical. As the book progresses, you find yourself in the protagonist's head, and you see her life unfolding through her eyes. At one point, the sheer indifference of the people around her regarding the divorce will make you so angry that you can't help but feel empathy towards the protagonist. It's heartbreaking; it's so full of rage, and the symbolism that has been drawn with cicadas and Diana (the Roman Goddess of the hunt) is hauntingly beautiful.
To cope with the sudden distress, the protagonist turns to astrology and spirals down, thinking about every detail, every incident that has taken place over the years that she didn't pay much attention to before, but now she's seeing how there were signs all along. There's also a foster cat, seen here as the counterpart to her husband, who has abandoned the entire family. The narrator also didn't grow up seeing a very happy marriage either, and as the story progresses, it's so clear that so many of her insecurities and beliefs are direct consequences of her parents' marriage and her strained relationship with her sister.
I personally loved the contrast between the narrator and her sister, and how they both chose completely different paths and ended up surviving through compromise; nobody's really 'better' than the other. This novel is as good a domestic piece of fiction can get, and something Murakami lovers would devour given that it doesn't give much of a clarity. It doesn't give you a thrill, but it is also something you quite can't put away either.

I really tried reviewing this in a more constructive manner, but genuinely not possible given how much I felt while reading this!

Thank you @harpercollinsin for sending across a copy!

College freshman Lily Chen is off to spend the summer in Taipei at an intensive language program like so many Chinese American students before her, hoping to connect with the culture she inherited but never fully understood. But a promising start quickly unravels. Her classes are grueling, her roommate is driving her insane, and a reckless trip to the hot springs with a guy she barely knows soon has her classmates viciously gossiping. She feels adrift, a foreigner in a country she thought would feel like home.

Then shocking news Lily’s grandfather has passed away. The loss forces her to grapple with now-unanswerable questions about her family history. As Lily grieves, she’s drawn into a journey of self-discovery—piecing together memories, stories, and silences over a series of hilarious and devastating attempts at connection.

Lucknow, 1829. The glittering capital of Awadh stands at the zenith of its splendour. Its poets are revered, its cuisine is exquisite, and its syncretic culture is the envy of the subcontinent. As the sacred days of Muharram draw to their solemn climax, thousands of mourners are about to gather beneath the soaring minarets of the magnificent Asafi Imambara.

Among them is the young Mirza Ghalib, already a poet of renown, travelling home to Delhi. Invited by the great marsiya poet Mir Anees to witness Lucknow’s unparalleled commemorations of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at Karbala, Ghalib expects an unforgettable encounter with poetry, faith, and history.

Instead, he witnesses a man plunge to his death from the summit of the Imambara’s towering minaret.

Was it an accident? Or was the dead man a victim of a deep political conspiracy? As Ghalib is drawn into the mystery, he finds himself ensnared in a web of intrigue whose roots run deep into the heart of the Nawabi state. There are powerful men with much to lose, and they will stop at nothing to ensure the truth never comes to light.

And the body count keeps on rising.

Drawn ever deeper into a labyrinth of intrigue, Ghalib must navigate a city where loyalties shift like shadows by @thelogophilereader

Atp I've done everything I never thought I'd do and all thanks to @simonandschusterin . I'm not much of a binge reader, but it's Adam Silvera guys, c'mon, it's only justified. For #simonsaysreadwithpride Challenge, I read books 1 and 2 of the Death Cast series, and no I'm not even close to complaining!! Mateo and Rufus, Orion and Valentino - what have you done :')
I'm not even a series person, but I'm so sad that I haven't read the last book yet!
Ok for my review, call me biased but I'll read anything Adam Silvera writes any day. The ideas are nothing like you've ever read, and it adds a thrill to the entire experience of reading a book. The language is uhh ok ok, not fancy, not very lucid, not something that'd require you to sit with a dictionary, to put it precisely, you can go to bed with this book and no dictionary. :)
And the characters?? Adam Silvera writes queer characters so effortlessly that their sexuality never feels like the only thing that defines them. You read them and realise that first and foremost, they're just... people. They've got their fears, dreams, regrets, family issues, and so, so much love to give.

It's all so natural that somewhere along the way, you stop thinking about LGBTQ representation altogether and just find yourself rooting for two people who found each other at the exact moment they needed someone the most.

One very important takeaway from these books? Knowing the ending doesn't make the journey any less meaningful. You know what's coming right from the very beginning, and yet you happily go on and read 500 pages! That's Adam Silvera's magic. :)

The story literally revolves around the very heavy topic of death, but somehow it's filled with so much life, hope, and love that by the end, it'll have you questioning whether you're even living your own life to the fullest or not. :') by @thelogophilereader

Me? Enjoying fantasy? I didn't see that coming either.
I'll start off by saying this, I'm not someone who reads a lot of fantasy or even sci-fi. But this? So, so glad I picked it up, and all thanks to @simonandschusterin 🫶🏻

Honestly, I've heard some pretty great things about F.T. Lukens, but I'd never actually gotten around to reading one of their books. So, this was more of a whimsical, "let's see if this works for me" kind of read. And before I knew it, I was completely hooked and had devoured the book in just three sittings!!

The absolute best part for me? The grumpy × sunshine trope!! I loved it so much! And if you ask me, this was definitely a slow burn. I was genuinely rooting for, and practically praying for these two protagonists to finally find their way to each other!! 😭

And to everyone who thinks fiction is irrelevant or has nothing to do with the real world, read this book and try drawing parallels between the Consortium and the world we live in today. You'll get it. :)

The way themes of magic, a beautiful queer love story, and a world that feels not quite as fictional as it seems have been woven together is truly commendable. There's something so effortlessly compelling about the way the story manages to be magical while still touching upon themes that feel incredibly real and relevant.

The language is simple and easy to follow, there aren't too many characters to keep track of, and it's overall such a fun, accessible read. So, if you're a beginner looking for a goooood queer fantasy read, I'd definitely say give this one a shot. :')

One of the few Insta favorites that's worth the hype! I read this 2 years back, but I find myself going back to this often... it's the perfect read for someone who wants to feel disgustingly educated, or just likes morally gray characters, and an unreliable narrator, or just likes drama (lots of it).

P.S. - Yes, my copy is heavily annotated (I just love this sm)
