Just over a week ago, nearly a year to the day we lost Grandma, my family buried my grandfather.

I’m still processing what life’s going to look like without these two encouraging and kindhearted souls here on Earth to share it with. They endured so much hardship in their lifetime; more than I can put into words and more than I can possibly imagine. And even still, they used all of these experiences, every ounce of their being to push my dad, and decades afterward me, to be all we could.

Grandpa, in particular, was always concerned about how I carried myself. It didn’t come from a place of empty self-adulation or misplaced bravado about “what it means to be a man” or whatever. He wasn’t even concerned with how I looked shuffling around, eyes to the ground, avoiding contact with any and every person I crossed paths with.

He just wanted me to see in myself what he saw from the very beginning: a promising young man with a good head on his shoulders and something to contribute to the world. With an appropriately prudent and tender guiding hand, Grandpa slowly pulled me out of that shell. He helped me invest in myself and, most importantly, he always reminded me that I had two people who loved and supported me unconditionally along the way.

That’s not to say I don’t still have work to do. Lord knows I still struggle with my sense of self-worth and motivation far more frequently than I’m comfortable addressing with any sincerity in a public forum like this. But without Grandpa and Grandma’s persistent counsel and love and compassion and endless support, I wouldn’t have discovered as early as I did that this whole thing, this existence, is a constant work in progress. And that there’s merit and dignity in working towards becoming the person you're content with presenting to the world in the precious time God provides.

So yeah. My heart is probably the heaviest it's ever been. It’s the chapter of my life that I foolishly hoped I’d never see. I already miss both of them so much. But I’m also grateful for what I was able to gain having these beautiful people on my team for as long as I did. That alone is one of God’s greatest blessings.
