Meet Maine’s Johnny Appleseed of Milkweed. Since last summer, Bushey, now in his mid-60s, has had boots on the ground, mapping, harvesting, planting, and protecting milkweed—the required plant host and meal of choice for monarch butterfly larvae—in hopes of saving these vital insects, one seed at a time. Head to the link in our bio to read more about this mapmaker and milkweed cultivator.

During the pandemic, many people came to @thehoneyexchange in Portland looking for a new hobby, a new way of interacting with the natural world, maybe even a new community to make up for the ones that broke down out of necessity and caution. “2020 was our biggest year in terms of interest in beekeeping,” says Meghan Gaven, who co-owns the shop and classroom with her husband Phil. “But 2021 was a close second.” Read more about how you too can become a backyard beekeeper with the link in our bio.

With two needles and diamond awl, which he sharpens himself, Peter Dorman sews together a shoe’s toe box using a single waxed thread. Now 87, Dorman learned to sew shoe leather by hand in 1962, back when Maine was one of the world's major shoe manufacturers. Read more about how he and other Maine artisans are keeping the tradition of shoemaking alive with the link in our bio.
