New year. New me.

After 4 years of growing my locs, I decided to cut them. Just to feel something different.

At first I was scared because I had grown accustomed to a version of myself that stared back at me from the mirror.

But in cutting it, I make new discoveries. And allow myself the chance to not be tied down to previous versions of myself.

I am always evolving. Always changing. Always growing. And my hair, while beautiful, is just an outward reflection of that inner machination.

I still love my Blackness. My 4C hair. My complexion. And all the magical, resilient strength given me by my ancestors.

This is a new chapter. And God still walks with me in it.

This past year has been filled with its share of triumphs and failures. It’s not always easy to share those low points on social media. This isn’t really a platform for that. But to summarize, I am a dreamer who has found himself on the brink for the past few months.

It’s easy to share the news about something big happening. But it’s harder to NOT get that phone call. To sit somewhere in between the conception and the realization of an impossible thing.

But as artists, we do this all the time. We swallow the disappointment and try not to let it destroy our confidence.

But this is a story of resilience. I press on. I am scared more often than I thought I would be. A little more than I care to admit. But if there is one thing that the past year, and 38 years on this earth have taught me, it’s that God is always able to come through.

So, in the meantime, I tuck my chin and try to move forward. In spite of the obstacles, I’m still here. My now late mentor, used to say that life gives us the tests first and the lessons after. I have found that to be even more true in my adult life.

But with each test, I learn a little bit more and I am stronger. I can’t wait until the Lord transforms my test into my testimony. Cheers to another year of fighting to keep the dream alive.
