Over the years as an MC/Compere, I've come to learn the difference between connecting with a room and connecting a room. The first is about you; the second is about everyone else in the room.

Hosting the “Passing the Torch” Colloquium & Book Launch to celebrate my ègbón @idyenang at 60, was a beautiful reminder that the microphone is not the point; the people are.

It's important to know when to speak, when to listen, when to lift the energy, and when to get out of the way.

Because the real craft of being a good MC/Compere is NOT about being heard; it's about making sure the right people are. by @themanjoba

When we first teamed up with @heartsandrhythm and @themanjoba to surprise one lucky attendee with a session, we never expected it to be this much fun.

Rosemary was the perfect subject as she stood in front of our lens @barney.photography_ , and we spent just as much time creating fabulous portraits as we did having deep conversations in session, from love to family to living. That’s the beauty of @heartsandrhythm the way it connects people and hearts in the authentic way that only live music can.

I wrote this piece yesterday. Hope you can learn something from it.

WE DON'T DO THAT HERE.

I used to think love meant being flexible;
So I kept bending.
I let one snide comment slide at work.
Laughed off the rude joke they made at my expense; and it wasn't even funny o.

I kept telling myself, _"Joba, pick your battles."_
Except I never picked any.
I was being patient, I said. But was I?
Or was it just convenient?

I didn't know that the silence after
"It's fine" or "Don't worry about it"...
…was teaching people something.
I was grading their tests;
and writing PASS on every answer - even the wrong ones.

Funny thing is…
All I was teaching them
…rode off what I was teaching myself - looking at my goals and saying,
"I'll start again on Monday." - maybe the upper one.
Speaking to myself in ways I would never speak to someone I actually liked.

So, No; I won't blame them for everything.
How were they to know how I wanted to be treated, when I hadn't shown them?
How would they know I want care, respect, or even consideration when I keep showing up like I don't require any of it?

I'm re-learning now. Slowly.
Treating myself a little better.
Finishing one small thing before starting another.
Keeping promises I make to myself,
A firmer “No” here, a bolder “Yes” there.
And some days, when I catch myself about to let something slide, I stop;
"Not today. We don't do that here."

Call it pride if you want.
I'm learning to call it, “self-regard”.
Because maybe the people around me
aren't the only ones being taught;
I'm learning too.
I'm learning all that I'm truly worth.
