It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war. ⚔️🌱🖤

We feel honored to have been invited again to guide a Kali session at this year’s Rooted in Resistance 4-day Intensive—an intentional gathering that shares culture and lineage of African and Southeast Asian fighting styles. To be in a space that centers black and brown martial artists and to learn about the paths of struggle that connects our histories is humbling, confirming, and straight up beautiful.

Sometimes it’s hard to give ourselves a little grace. We place so much value on youth and grow nostalgic for who we used to be that we forget how much life unfolds after we release expectations and control.

We learn to breathe, to be present, and to appreciate what our bodies can do right now.

Maybe we aren’t as fast, as lean, or as strong as we want to be in this moment — but I’m grateful for the ability to move, to grow, and to keep showing up with what I have. I am here, and I will give 100% every day, even if my 100% looks different on a daily basis.

Happy Birthday to my son, who turned 16 this week. May he always sees me as someone who keeps trying — someone who chooses to be present, joyful, and kind to herself. by @themartialheartist

The Korean war fan (mubuchae; Hangul: 무부채) was a Korean martial arts weapon that originated in the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Swords and similar weapons were banned from most people during this time which created a desire for weapons that could be held in plain sight without arousing suspicion.

Some combative fan users wove flexible metal ribbons along the outermost edge for cutting power, while others preferred feathers that hid finger-sized razor blades, which could cut deeply upon raking the fan’s edge along a target. Other fans were designed to hold vials of poison or were used to conceal other weapons such as propelled daggers which could be released upon snapping the fan open, a technique a few modern martial artists are said to still practice and cultivate.

Poison fans often hid deadly or stunning concoctions in small bladders or sacs which could be released upon spreading the fan open, allowing the user to gently direct a gust of irritants and toxins at their opponent over short distances.

Old dog learning new tricks. I’ve been doing this double knife form for a while now, always skipping over this drop from a 360° jump because I’m scared and in my head I can’t do it. Going to get this eventually. This is me on day 1. Posting because I need a goal. taken in Tukong Martial Arts - Tukong Austin by @themartialheartist

Nearly a month ago we did a thing. So proud of my friends for doing this demo with me and sharing our love of Filipino movement with our community. We do this for preservation, empowerment, joy, and protection.
