What level of performance and standard do you operate by in your business?⁠ ⁠ Is your intention to offer ‘good service’, ‘excellent service’, or ‘perfect service’?⁠ ⁠ Now the bigger question, are your team members and contractors aware of your standards? Do they clearly understand how to meet it?⁠ ⁠ People often verbally set standards such as, “We want everything we do to be excellent”, but there are a few key mistakes with this:⁠ • We assume all team members have a similar understanding of a standard of excellence. Generally, people know ‘excellent’ is better than ‘good’, but what is the exact definition?⁠ • We assume everyone’s standard of “excellence” is measurable, obvious, and clear.⁠ • We assume taking real care is enough to maintain a standard of excellence. Yet, think of cooking, taking care doesn’t necessarily ensure an excellent recipe or meal⁠ • We fail to explain exactly what our version of excellence in service delivery looks like.⁠ ⁠ So, how do you set and manage your operational standards with your entire team, every single day?! ⁠ ⁠ This is a significant task.⁠ ⁠ You need to identify, beyond the label, the specifics of your expectations for delivery, quality, and performance.⁠ Make this a part of how you communicate with your team with examples, “Last week, Joe demonstrated excellence when he…”⁠ ⁠ Define the standards of your company culture with enough specific details that new staff and team members get it on day one. It should be part of new employee training too.⁠ ⁠ Most importantly, you need to commit to it.⁠ ⁠ Many companies speak about a standard but aren’t prepared to re-do or call back something that doesn’t meet these standards.⁠ ⁠ They aren’t prepared to admit that it could have been better.⁠ ⁠ So, starting today, commit to a certain standard in your business.⁠ ⁠ Define it with a word, or a phrase.
