When Archive of Our Own (AO3) went offline, the team behind the site estimated service restoration could take 2 weeks to a full month. Readers and authors alike braced for a long, agonizing wait. What they didn't expect was a swarm of opportunists moving in to fill the void with their stories. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. by @themarysue
itch.io says the number of game pages created per day has doubled in the past two months, and much of the surge is AI slop. The store has deleted terabytes of it, extended its AI-notice requirement to tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks, and added a filter that hides anything with an AI notice. by @themarysue
OPINION: Formula 1’s popularity boom has produced a lot of things, and one of them is a shelf of young adult romances set in the paddock. This week, one of those books ended up at the center of F1 Twitter. A tweet pointing out that the lead in 'Hold Position' by Erika Wilson reads exactly like Oscar Piastri went around fast, and the replies did the rest. Readers lined up to compare notes: the nationality, the personality, the career trajectory. By the end of the day, the original tweet had amassed ten thousand likes and more than a handful of quotes. Sally Rooney’s books are flying off the shelves in Northern Ireland after her publisher, Faber & Faber, announced it will stop distributing her work in the UK. Faber says British anti-terrorism law means it can’t pass on her earnings. Rooney has donated some of her book proceeds to Palestine Action, which was proscribed in the UK last year. Belfast’s No Alibis sold out by morning, Bridge Books in Co Down says sales have more than quadrupled, and Kennys Bookshop in Galway reports a tenfold jump, with many orders coming from the UK. by @themarysue
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo made a bold statement in the middle of her Columbus concert on Friday, October 30, 2026, by handing flowers directly to Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. 'Obsession' breakout Michael Johnston is opening up about a part of his career that turned out to matter far more than a résumé line. Wil Wheaton responded to a social media tribute from Stephen Miller regarding the death of Patrick Stewart by telling the White House staffer to keep the actor’s name out of his mouth. This sharp rebuke appeared on the Threads platform shortly after news of the legendary actor’s passing circulated. Wheaton, who shared the screen with Stewart for years on Star Trek: The Next Generation, made it clear that he felt Miller had no right to honor his former co-star. If you’ve spent the last day mashing refresh on Archive of Our Own (AO3) and getting nothing back, take a breath: you’re not alone, and your fics are safe. But the full story is a lot bigger than the “scheduled maintenance” notice that first greeted readers and writers on Thursday. On October 29, the Organization for Transformative Works’ beloved fanfiction repository went dark. What began as a brief notice that AO3 was down for maintenance, with an expected 12 hours of downtime, has since been revealed as something far more serious. According to the latest update from the site, administrators detected evidence of a security incident and are still in the early stages of determining its scope. Somewhere out there, a thousand people midway through a 400K-word slow burn just felt a collective chill. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. by @themarysue
Cynthia Erivo is finally opening up about the reaction fans had toward her friendship with Ariana Grande during the massive press tour for Wicked. Hideo Kojima’s strangest franchise is about to get stranger. The first teaser for Death Stranding Isolations, the hand-drawn animated series headed to Disney+, has arrived, and it opens with the haunting line “My mom became a crater.” If you’re hoping to watch Sam Porter Bridges haul packages for eight episodes, adjust your expectations. The series follows an original story about a young man and a young woman, set in North America shortly after Sam reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network. Connection has been restored, but the changes bring new problems for people trying to rebuild their lives. That’s a fitting angle for a franchise that has always asked what connection actually costs us. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. by @themarysue
Pour one out for your inventory slots, because PUBG is headed to Netflix. The streamer announced this week that a live-action series based on KRAFTON’s battle royale phenomenon is in development, with Donald Glover attached to write, direct, executive produce, and star. Yes, all four. The man is determined to be the entire squad. Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. by @themarysue
