It’s been a long time coming, but something about this piece called to me—and the title Reverence wouldn’t let me go.

Originally, I had a different piece in mind for the entryway. But when that piece turned out to be just a bit too large and was relocated, I knew exactly what belonged here.

Designing isn’t just about me though; it’s about creating a space that feels right for my family too. So, I took my time to consider other options.

But creative work—whether it’s design, art, fashion, music, or film—has always been about feeling for me. And with this piece from Aliyah Sadaf for Athena Calderone’s Crate & Barrel collection , I couldn’t ignore that. It just feels right at home and makes perfect sense in our space.

Reverence means deep respect, admiration, and honor. I want people to feel that as they enter our home and take it with them as they depart.

Because our home is a sanctuary—a place where love and intention have been poured into every detail and fill every square foot, inside and out.

I’ve spent the better part of 15 years helping bring other people’s visions to life.

For years, that was my role inside one business. I was the person behind the scenes taking the idea, figuring out what it would take to make it real, building the systems around it, solving problems, making decisions, and helping carry the vision through execution.

Then, for the last five years, I did the same thing alongside Alisha through our business consulting work: helping other entrepreneurs take what they could see for their businesses and figure out how to actually build it.

And now I’m doing something of my own around design.

If I’m honest, some days it feels like I’m starting over.

I believe in the work. I believe in the offers I’ve created. I believe in my eye, my abilities, my experience, and my capacity to help someone take what they can already see for their home and actually bring it to life.

But believing in what you’ve built and knowing how to communicate its value are two different things.
And lately I’ve been sitting with that.

Because you can make something thoughtful. You can know it solves a real problem. You can know you’re good at the work.

And there’s still that question:
Will anybody buy it?
Will people understand what I’m trying to do?
Will they see me doing this and believe I’m the person who can help them?

That part feels vulnerable to admit.

Especially when, from the outside, this probably looks like a completely different direction.
But the more I sit with it, the more I realize I’m not actually starting from nothing.

The medium is different.
The work isn’t.

I’ve spent my career helping people close the gap between what they envision and what they’re actually able to execute.

I’ve done it inside a company.
I’ve done it consulting with business owners.
And now I’m doing it in people’s homes.

Maybe this isn’t starting over.
Maybe I’m finally seeing the throughline. by @themauricep

I worked at @apple for 5 years, and I’m genuinely excited about HomeView. Will I be getting one? TBD.

I already have iPads on @iportproducts wall mounts doing a version of this job in our current house. Quick reality check if you’re comparing: the iPort mount costs about the same as HomeView before the iPad or a case, and both need a PoE adapter. They’re built for different things, but they share one planning requirement.

If you want PoE, decide before drywall, when low voltage goes in. Adding it later is a much bigger job.

Building or renovating? Save this for your electrician conversation.

Did I already plan for PoE in the next house? You know it.

The PIVOT Method wasn’t created for home design. But that’s exactly why it works here.

My wife @itsalishamp and I developed this framework around a belief that’s guided much of our work: the smaller the gap between what you say you value and what you actually build, the better your life feels.

We’ve applied that thinking to business, leadership, and major life decisions. A home is another place where that gap can show up.

Most people approach a new build thinking the design studio is where the big decisions happen. By then, some of the most important ones have already been made.

Before we signed a contract or selected a single finish, we got clear on how this home needed to function for our family. Most of the floor plan worked. The kitchen didn’t, so we asked if the plan itself could change, and the builder said yes.

But the yes isn’t the point. We knew what we needed before we started choosing from what was available.

That’s PIVOT in practice. And you don’t need to be building a house to use it.

Whether you’re renovating a kitchen, furnishing a room, or trying to understand why a space you already have doesn’t quite feel right, the same framework applies.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll walk through each phase and show you how I’m applying it to this build, starting with the one almost nobody does first.

I’ve also created a free guide to help you apply the PIVOT Method to your own home.

Comment PIVOT and I’ll DM you how to get your copy.

I drew this fireplace to scale by hand, and I almost didn’t build it.

What got me there was a blog from @chrislovesjulia about the dual fireplace in a previous home of theirs. Theirs was flanked by two arched walkways. Mine ended up with arched niches on either side. Not the same concept, but close enough to confirm what I was picturing would work.

You don’t always need someone to hand you the idea. Sometimes you need proof that yours holds up.

Selling our home is something we ended up considering. Leaving Verrado never was.

We moved to Arizona in 2015. My wife found Verrado when there wasn’t much here, and she fell for it right away. We didn’t get here until February 2022.

For a long time it felt out of reach. We sold three homes in three years, and every time I wondered if we should have moved to Verrado. We’d drive up to the custom lots, sit in the car or walk them, and daydream. Building this home was a dream come true.

Because Verrado doesn’t feel like the desert. Palm trees, green everywhere, the White Tank Mountains behind it. Schools from elementary through high school, custom homes and lots, more shopping and restaurants every year, and our kids are connected to their friends here.

Our next home isn’t a custom build. We’re staying anyway.

If you’ve been daydreaming about a place like this, send this to someone who’d love it here.

We’re officially on the market. It doesn’t feel real, but here we are.

4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 2 offices, an award winning kitchen, a 15.5 foot island, a custom range hood and fireplace, a game room, a massive laundry room, two side yards, and a backyard w/ pool and outdoor kitchen.

The list goes on, but it only tells part of it.

The rest is how you experience the home once you’re inside. The warmth. The cohesion. 18-foot ceilings and open spaces that still feel grounded. It was designed with intention, and you feel that in every room.

Come feel it for yourself. To schedule a showing, reach out to @carlsoncollective and @kenbinder.realestate
