#AD | On my first ever shift as a doctor, I found myself as the night doctor on-call for 100+ surgical patients…

So, here I’m sharing what I learnt from being thrown in at the deep end — and the things I wish I’d known before that first shift.

If there’s only ONE thing you remember from this post: always ask for help. There is no such thing as a stupid question, and as an SHO, I would much rather hear from you than find out you were struggling on your own.

#ad a GMC referral is not the same as losing your licence. Here’s what the process actually looks like

💙Triage first - many cases are closed before investigation
💙Formal investigation – you may need to respond in writing, get some support for this from your medical defence organisation like @themdu_
💙The MDU assigns you a medico-legal adviser - a fellow doctor who’s been in clinical practice, who’ll work alongside your legal team and support you every step of the way
💙 If a resolution isn’t found, it will be passed onto the medical practitioners tribunal service who conduct formal hearings.
💙 Most cases result in no action on registration
💙The process can be long - your mental health matters too. The MDU has a 24/7 emergency helpline, and the GMC offers a free confidential support service for doctors under investigation
