From the college’s earliest study spaces to Lesher Library and today’s Downey Learning Resource Center, generations of Blue Devils have found a place to learn, study and plan what comes next.

Fun fact: When the library moved into the Lesher Building in 1972, approximately 22,000 books made the move, too.

The spaces have changed. The purpose hasn’t.

Since 1962, we’ve been here. So you can get there. by @themercedcollege

For nearly 40 years, Dr. Max Hallman taught philosophy at Merced College, touching the lives of generations of students.

His daughter, Hannah Redd-Hallman, wanted to celebrate his lasting legacy in a tangible way by honoring him with a plaque on the Alumni Trident.

Some legacies deserve to be remembered forever.

Honor someone who has made a difference with a plaque of your own.

Hundreds of local residents made their way to Stephen Leonard Park in Merced for a ribbon-cutting and community event to celebrate the new Merced College South Merced Center.

The facility will serve as an outreach hub on the south side of town, bringing college resources closer to neighborhood residents. Students will have access to study space, tutoring services, financial aid and application assistance, and career and transfer support.

Merced College President Chris Vitelli spoke about how the South Merced Center came to fruition. Trustees voiced a desire to have a presence in this part of the city as was directed in the college's educational master plan. The new center fulfills that goal.

“Merced College is here, and we're here to stay because we want to do things right in south Merced,” Vitelli said. “This is one of the proudest moments I've had as president, being here in this beautiful community and having the opportunity to have a footprint with the center that is serving the community that we so dearly love.”

As part of the process to establish the center, Merced College surveyed the surrounding area and found that 75 percent of respondents would avail themselves of the resources available in the South Merced Center.

Vitelli said the center will open the doors for students to have a better education, jobs, careers, college, and other life-changing opportunities.

“That is the vision of the Merced College South Merced Center,” he said. “It's about the importance of meeting students where they are. Today we're putting those words into action. Instead of asking south Merced students to come to Merced College … Merced College is coming to south Merced, and we're here to stay.” by @themercedcollege
