Eight years ago today, I lost my precious dad, and the ache of his absence endures. He was a living teddy bear with big brown eyes, lashes that reached to the moon, and a heart full of unwavering love. Despite his physical challenges, he always smiled, laughed, and found joy—especially in his family. He cherished his granddaughter with a love beyond words. My dad was my constant, someone I could rely on through anything, and his pride in us never faltered. Yesterday, in the midst of fear and chaos, I felt him with us—his warmth, his strength, his love. October is officially #dwarfismawarenessmonth and it’s an opportune time to raise awareness about people with skeletal dysplasia. The picture above was doctored and sent to me by someone whom I no longer speak to. It’s mean, and while it reflects poorly on the person who sent it, it also demonstrates how far we have left to go. Little people do not require baby car seats to drive. We might need special adaptive equipment, but not this. Let’s do better. Let’s be kinder, and decent in the way in which we treat people. If we are unsure or uncertain about something, asking questions is never a bad thing. Educating ourselves on how to better understand what we don’t know is never wrong but intentionally demeaning people with disabilities is wrong. by @themereaton
