It’s a long-cherished holiday tradition to collect and gift ornaments inspired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Swipe to learn more about the history of our beloved annual Star, Snowflake, and Angel Tree ornaments.The Met Store’s first annual ornament, introduced in 1971, was a sterling silver snowflake designed by the Hungarian artist Józef Domjån.Our first collectible Star Ornament, also designed by Domjån, debuted the following year in 1972.A decade later, we offered star and snowflake ornaments on the same catalog page for the first time.In 1991, The Met Store presented a star and snowflake reimagining quilts in The Met collection, marking a new tradition of annual ornaments inspired by the Museum’s holdings. Our offerings have since expanded to include finely crafted sterling silver versions of our stars and snowflakes. Each Snowflake Ornament is made of lustrous sterling silver, and each Star Ornament is crafted with 18K gold over a sterling silver base.In 1995, we catch a glimpse of what would become our annual Angel Tree ornaments inspired by The Met’s Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche. The original design was included in one of The Met Store’s former “Museum Ornament” books featuring cardboard ornaments and photographs of the angels in the Museum’s celebrated holiday display.In 2001, The Met Store introduced the first Angel Tree Ornament as we know it today: an elegant ornament with a matte gold overlay and a ribbon for hanging.The Met Store continues to draw inspiration from artworks and objects across the Museum’s holdings, such as an 18th-century French button and a 1931 photograph by W. A. Bentley.Our designers are always looking through The Met collection for new inspiration for our annual ornaments, but some artworks are so compelling, we revisit them and reimagine them with different designs. The photographer W. A. Bentley was the first person to capture a snowflake on film, and his 1931 photograph in the Museum's holdings has served as inspiration for both our 2006 and 2016 Snowflake Ornament.Start your very own Met Store ornament collection with our 2026 Star, Snowflake, and Angel Tree ornaments. A must-add to your summer #TBR 📚Fashion transforms our bodies. “Costume Art”, a recent release from @MetCostumeInstitute and @MetPubs, explores this concept through the lens of age, size, gender, and disability, demonstrating how the clothed body is central to artistic expression and representation. The luxuriously designed book features new photography by Paul Westlake (@Paul_Westlake), a die-cut cover, three specialty papers, debossed details, and metallic silver foils. Assemblages by Julie Wolfe (@JulieWolfeArtist) with photography by Nathalie Agussol (@PanAndTheDream were commissioned specifically for this volume to highlight the connection between art and fashion through collage, overlay, and juxtaposition. Roses are red, Irises are blue,Do these two paintings look similar to you? 💐👀Both were painted by Van Gogh, who painted them on the same night. In May 1890, just before he checked himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted four exuberant bouquets of spring flowers. They were the only still lifes of any ambition he had undertaken during his yearlong stay: two of irises, two of roses, in contrasting color schemes and formats.
