Goodbye to the best boy a guy could ever ask for, Jax. We’d call him the joy of Jax because it seemed like it was the only emotion he had, and it was infectious. Almost everyone who met him would mention things like “wow that’s the happiest dog I’ve ever seen!”

I guess that’s why in his old age and even in his last months he didn’t seem to have a single gray hair on him. He was positivity in its purest form encapsulated into a dog shape. My gratitude for him and the love he brought for me and my family, including during some of our most difficult times, is immeasurable. The memories of him back in Caledon running through fields, jumping into ponds, and being an absolute goofball are treasured.

A star can only shine that bright for so long though, and the body can only keep up so much as they get older, so today we had to make the difficult choice to say goodbye to him.

RIP my Jaxy dude. My life is infinitely richer for having had you in it. I’ll love you forever and make sure that positivity you brought to the world never truly leaves ❤️ by @themikemarino

I don’t really like posting overly sentimental stuff but it would feel remiss to not acknowledge that today is exactly 10 years without my dad. Essentially one-third of my life.

In that time I’ve graduated college, been living out my dream of working in the film industry, moved to Toronto, and most importantly met the love of my life and got married.

It goes without saying that I wish he was here for all of it, but at the same time he still kind of is. I’m writing this sitting at the TIFF Lightbox cafe in downtown Toronto waiting for a movie to start. Over a decade ago, I was a country kid who started to really fall in love with movies and having one of the world’s biggest film festivals in my backyard was the dream entrance to really expose myself to the world of film. But the catch was, I was a nervous country boy who was absolutely not comfortable driving in a big city. So my dad, who was frankly hesitant at first for me to go into such a crazy industry (classic immigrant story), would drive me down to go see movies and experience as much as possible. I kid you not, he would wait around downtown for HOURS while I went to different movies and indulge this dream I had. He didn’t necessarily want to go see some artsy films with me, but he just wanted to support me and let me chase my dream.

And would you look at that, more than a decade later and I live downtown, working in that very industry, and sitting at a movie theatre waiting for a movie to start.
