On this day in 1979, American Airlines Flight 191, a McDonell Douglas DC-10 with 258 passengers and 13 crew, began its takeoff roll from Chicago O’Hare’s Runway 32R, bound for Los Angeles. As the aircraft was rotating, due to AA's poor maintenance practices, the number 1 engine and its pylon assembly separated from the left wing, damaging it in the process, as well as severing various hydraulic lines. The engine flipped over the top of the wing and landed on the runway. For the next 31 seconds, the stricken aircraft managed to reach a height of only 350 feet (110 m) above ground, while spewing fuel and hydraulic fluid from its left wing, which gradually lost lift, entering an aerodynamic stall. The aircraft banked sharply to the left and rolled on its side, slamming into a field about 1,5 km from the end of the runway. Since the cockpit was equipped with a CCTV camera positioned above the captain’s shoulder and connected to screens in the passenger cabin, the passengers may have witnessed these events from the viewpoint of the cockpit as the aircraft dove towards the ground. Parts of the DC-10 impacted on an adjacent trailer park, destroying several trailers and cars, as well as an old storage hangar at the edge of the airport and a garage, killing two employees. With a total of 273 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest aviation accident to have occurred in the United States. Among the victims was Leonard Stogel, a music producer and manager, whose parents had died onboard American Airlines Flight 1, in 1962.
