Ziad Rahbani (voc Farouk Koussa) Jabhat al-Moqawama al-Wataniyya al-Lobnaniyya (Jammoul) from Ana Much Kafer (Aprodisco 1985)

“They broke the podiums, ran out of words, dried out the songs, and exhausted the poems, all while relegating every cause to al-Janub (the South).” Empty praise got us nowhere. Those who fight and endure do so without performative or rhetorical clowning. “If the Janub still stands, it stands because of its own children.” This is the struggle of the wretched, the people. “Those who speak today are not the ones who died; the wretched around the world are always the same people.” Lest this become yet another song about al-Janub: “This is not a song; it is a salute, nothing more.” by @themixtapeproject.art

Vendor Spotlight: Palestine Solidarity Mixtapes:
Lebanon.
The mixtape is a curation of songs of solidarity with Palestine produced in Lebanon during the 1970s, a period when the Palestinian struggle was widely understood as inseparable from local, regional, and transnational struggles against a threefold enemy: colonial domination, imperial intervention, and class oppression. While Arabic songs are often taken for granted as being in solidarity with Palestine, such assumptions are essentialist and obscure the political work of solidarity. For many, the struggle exceeded questions of shared Arab identity.
It was a material struggle, shaped by common conditions of oppression and horizons of revolutionary liberation. In Lebanon, class struggle and anti colonial politics informed one another.
Written at the height of the Palestinian Revolution, these songs emerged from a moment when cultural production functioned as a tool of political alignment, mobilization, and collective imagination. They stand as testimony to an informed, relational, and materially grounded solidarity that was intersectional in practice and transnational in scope, linking liberation movements across borders by songs and fire.
Nour Jamil is a Brooklyn-based writer, scholar, performer, and cultural activist. As a selector/DJ, Nour curates a mix of funk and soul house, disco, electro-Arab, and global grooves. Nour is also a historian of sonic cultures from the Global South. They host The Party Is Not Over!, a mutual aid dance party that challenges the apolitical escapism of mainstream nightlife while centering community and intention on the dance floor. by @themixtapeproject.art

The idea of defining one’s work as cultural as a way of separating it from the political realm is problematic to say the least. It stems from a normalized association of the “political” with sectarian identities, and has for long dictated the ways in which many Lebanese construct and comprehend the world.

My article got published yesterday in the third edition of @al_rawiya magazine (LINK IN BIO). There is only so much ground I can cover with ~1000 words, but I hope it was sufficient to lay out some general ideas which I hope to elaborate in upcoming work, including my dissertation.

Thanks to the whole team at Al Rawiya and @uniteddiasporalb for making this happen. It was a pleasure to work with y’all, and looking forward to more!
