We’ve trusted our purifying needs to @levoit.sg for a while now and got our paws on their Vital Pet Pro air purifier, which we have enjoyed using alongside our older model that’s still running solidly. But with more bodies in our home these days, we needed more help!

@levoit.sg does a great job at purification, but my underrated favourite feature is the display lock, which is SO NECESSARY to help defend the poor purifier from being attacked by chubby little toddler fingers constantly switching on/off across all the different modes on offer.

Under normal operations when the purifier isn’t under siege from baby fingers, the purifier and its app tracks PM2.5 and TVOC in real time to really target what the air actually needs. The pre-filter pulls in dust and loose fur before it has a chance to settle, and there’s a separate pet-specific filter with activated carbon helping to clear the smellier side of things. The pre-filter is also easy to clean - the Vital Pet Pro scrapes collected debris off the pre-filter into a bottom tray on its own, to keep filtration at top performance. And because it’s oddly easy to pick up, plug and play, it just moves with us from the study to the bedroom, wherever it’s needed most.

Double lucky eight - Miya is eight! 😱 happy birthday to my brain dog!

This time last year, she was pretty ambivalent about our new addition. Since then, Miya has spent her year focused on experiencing a bunch of firsts with the growing boy. He found his first word (“DOG!!!” I was beyond thrilled, he truly is my son 🥺), threw his first ball for fetch, played his first game of tug with Miya. I’m happy to say that their relationship has changed for the better!

He’s taken his first steps and learnt to use his newfound balance to step carefully around her when she’s lying on the floor in his way. He voluntarily plants kisses on her while I have to persistently ASK him to kiss me, and he pats her gently but he smacks me while giggling. He starts saying her name even before he’s gotten home from school (“Mya mya! Mya mya!”) and looks for her before he looks for me. Meanwhile, she looks for him when we’re out playing fetch, and she sticks close to where he is.

But of course, it isn’t all roses….she’s corrected him like a puppy and has definitely bowled him over while doing her tricks, not understanding that he’s still working on his balance 😅 it’s resulted in tears and a bump or two, but he always forgives her with a pat and a treat.

As for the rest of us, Miya is only two years away from the ten years old that Kiyo was when Miya joined us, and I’m definitely feeling the itch to go back to the double dog life. Let’s see what adventures the next year takes us on together…and who knows, maybe one day we will be able to add an extra set of paw prints to our new family footprint art!

🔔 Merry FIRST Christmas, one and all! 🔔 🎄

You’re witnessing the start of a new Christmas experience for us all, and the start of a new Christmas tradition - where we have Miya and her boy in their very first annual Christmas shot together! It’s my first Christmas as a mom, Miya’s first as a “family” dog, and also the first time you guys are seeing this too, on the other sides of your screens! Hence, Happy First Christmas everyone!

And let me confirm: Miya was much easier to direct and shoot than the baby 😅😅 Miya ate only the things she was meant to eat, looked where she was meant to look and generally kept things neat. The baby….well….many things were drooled on, tasted, plucked out, dropped, tossed or pushed and we constantly had to reset the items within his reach. We’ll have to revisit this next year!

While we’ve taught Miya to leave the new daily food rain alone, we also need to make sure we #createcleanspace thoroughly after the food rain for our little floor mammals. We spend a LOT more time on our floors these days, but a lot of floor cleaners aren’t pet safe, triggering skin allergies.

This has sometimes been my answer when I’m asked for a “fun fact” to introduce myself with especially to non-dog people, or when I show interest in photography outside of IG…and the reaction before and after people see the photos can be quite something 😉

Keeping the whole family together from playtime to downtime!

Even with the new baby, we want to keep Miya at the center of our lives - it’s important to us to keep our little family sharing the same things as much as we can, creating intertwined family experiences and shared spaces.

So trying out @harveynormansg ‘s new pet-friendly sofa and coffee table meant that Miya can keep sharing the same space and make communal messes with the baby, without needing to worry about stains or scratches on the furniture - which we really enjoyed! On top of that, the sofa’s adjustable arms and headrests also made it pretty versatile with the extra space it offered, while the coffee table’s marble finish gave us the look of marble without the extra caretaking that marble needs.

From “a dog” to “a dog and a boy” :

I can’t believe our Miya turned 7 today! And WHAT A YEAR it’s been for Miya, with the addition of a wee boy (and a crap ton of new soft animal friends 😅) to the family. It’s been intense, and Miya’s surprised us all with her capacity for patience and understanding for the times when we are pulled in multiple directions.

But unlike the idyllic IG reels of dogs cuddling babies, Miya is not mad about the boy, and I mean that in both senses of “mad”. She’s not crazy into him but she’s also not angry about it. She’s largely indifferent. And truthfully, this is what I wanted. It means we’ve not had to constantly shoo her away from a baby’s underdeveloped immune system, creating negative associations during a time that’s already very overwhelming for everyone present. It also means that I’ve not really had to worry about Miya angrily lashing out at the baby. What it DOES mean, is that we have a clean slate to build a strong foundation for their future relationship. And that’s what we have been spending our time doing: walks together as I gain confidence in being able to handle both baby and Miya at the same time; little tricks building positive associations between baby and Miya; and family outings with both baby and Miya in the pram we specifically bought just because it could fit Miya in it too. We’re slowly nurturing our little family together by including everyone as much as we can, knowing that we need to put the work in and that the best relationships are not built overnight.

So, as 7th birthday wishes for our best girl Miya: here’s hoping that eventually we don’t say “a dog and a boy”, and we get the privilege to instead say “a dog and HER boy”. ♥️ I can’t wait to see how this love will blossom and have Miya take her new tiny team member under her wing. Happy 7th birthday, sweetheart!

This year’s gonna be one for the books!

Miya’s boy sidekick has arrived!! And this shot right here, is their very FIRST photo together, marking the start of what I hope will be a sweet lifetime together of happy memories. It’ll be a while before he’s up for sidekick business (or even holding his own head up…..newborns are SO unreasonably floppy….), but in the meantime, Miya has been unexpectedly super curious yet polite about him. We’re surprised because she’s never shown any interest in babies or kids before, to the point of absolute indifference. But now, she chooses to be nearby when I feed him, curling up to sleep on a chair next to me that she’s never shown the slightest interest in being on before. And when he cries, she shows signs of paying attention, sometimes going to investigate. She also politely sniffs him without being overly pushy whenever we offer him towards her.

Despite this, she is still getting used to the new environment we have at home, and we have a long way to go to properly acclimate her to him - and it is SO important that we go at Miya’s pace. While she was willing to take this shot together, she isn’t always keen to put her head so close to his, and when she does, we have to be extra careful as to where she puts it, eg not on top of him!

So say hello to our little new sidekick….who makes little Miya look huge! Context and perspective is everything and I swear this is the closest she’s ever gotten to looking like a full sized husky haha 😜

Oh - and happy lunar new year of the snake 🐍 to those who celebrate! It’s a quiet one for us but one of the busiest as we scramble to keep up with learning about our new addition! ❤️

Merry early Christmas, folks! What’s your favourite Christmas tradition + more interestingly, have you always had it or is it a new one? Swipe to see what I’m starting to think is a Miya tradition of her own…

I didn’t grow up celebrating Christmas - it was quite possible for Xmas to come and go without needing to even say a single “Merry Christmas” or “happy holidays”. But it’s the season my husband celebrates the most, so I’ve adopted it! And excitingly, it means all Xmas traditions are relatively new to me!

One Xmas tradition I’ve unintentionally developed over the last few years is to build my own Christmas decor, using fresh green materials that I pick up from the flower market - and then taking Miya’s yearly Xmas photos with the results! This year, I’ve made multiple Xmas wreaths. Part of the tradition is to choose the most aromatic greens in the flower market. Then, I really lose myself in the building process - my fingers getting sticky with fragrant sap; the scents of crushed pine, fir, juniper, eucalyptus and citrus; the visual detail as I slowly build my wreaths; immersing myself for hours that I don’t notice disappearing. I also don’t hang them up outside my home - they don’t survive so well in our heat outdoors. So they go up indoors, and I always lean in to take deep breaths as I’m walking past them in my home!

And in case it’s not clear….can I call Miya being sleepy on the job a tradition?!

Been searching high and low for the great reward of good sleep for the family…..and we found it @heveyasg! (*Ahem* see below for free gift details!)

“Oh get your sleep in while you can”….“you’re never sleeping again”….“say goodbye to sleep” 🙄

All super unhelpful things that people have said to us when they find out about the impending baby - but that’s a rant for another day! In the meantime, it means that whatever sleep we DO manage to get will need to be quality sleep and help us be better skin puppy trainers, er, I mean parents. After a decade in our old squished bed, and with all the recent aches of pregnancy, I was ready for a sleep set upgrade with @heveyasg !

Between the pure natural latex mattress and pillows, the cooling U-shaped pregnancy pillow (aka my sleepy 油条 yóu tiáo 😉), and supportive bed layers that lets me fidget without waking up my husband…we are actually sleeping better! There’s also something about the crisp linen sheets that satisfies my love of textures and need to TOUCH when I see them! To top it off, I was particularly reassured in our purchases by the personal sleep assessment that @heveyasg offers, to help get the best combination of mattress and pillow for each of us - it always bothered me that our previous beds and pillows were always bought based on a quick random lie down without proper thoughtful input from someone who knew what they were doing.

And because we now definitely have room to fit all 4 of us in bed together, including Miya…bring on sleepy family snuggle time! 😴

Missing those sunlit double dog days 🦊 🐶

We’ve gotten used to just Miya but I really do miss my double dog photography and tricks, if I’m honest. I miss the characters that shone through in my photography, the stories we told as a team, and how these two different dogs with 10 years’ age difference still played off each other. We would never have said Kiyo was the main character the way Miya is, but Kiyo occupied her space perfectly and indefinably. Because of Kiyo, I will never think that the quiet one or the “not-main characters” don’t matter!

I also still work with Miya on solo tricks, but it’s been a while since she’s done any duo tricks because they were all tricks that we trained exclusively between Kiyo and her. I definitely am hit hard in the heart whenever I see that hug trick that almost seemed to define my pair of girls and their relationship.

I suppose those calm days of having two sweet furry pups will be an even more missed memory soon, as it’ll be displaced by having one (probably) shocked 😮 furry pup and one uncoordinated noisemaker that can’t even hold its head up when it first arrives😅
