this is my great-gran, viola fletcher. aka mother.

a sharp-shooting, juke-jointing, shug avery type who loved some jesus. my grandmother used to say i was “wind,” just like her. never settled. hard to catch. i won’t argue that. but her happiness was a non-negotiable. something i’m still learning.

i wish i’d had more conversations with her. too many stories lost with just one person. i wish i knew more about my caddo roots. i’ve been thinking about legacy a lot lately. maybe because now that i finally have the right questions, the ones who could answer them aren’t here anymore. still, somehow, i get it. the stories i caught as a kid make so much more sense now as a woman.

when i’m unsteady, i think on her. and the other holy defiant ones like her — the tina’s, barbara’s, angela’s, the hattie’s, eartha’s, and rosia’s (too many to name). the ones who lit the path, knees shaking and guns blazing. again, too many stories lost with just one person.

i had a custom grill of my mom made in korea. (i think photo grills are the new lockets btw) then one day i was looking through some old photos and there it was, staring right back at me. not one, but two gold teeth.

in that moment i realized she was i. and i was her. i’m wind after all. and i loveeeee that. those negro-caddo roots run deep! 💞

To this day, when I see poodle trees, I see you. They were my happy trees, so you made sure they were at every house we owned. Thank you for that btw. Crazy to think you could sculpt trees into perfect balls from sight. Our own little Edward Scissorhands🐩♥️

But that was the beauty of you. No one could be around you and not walk away greener. A nurturer and a healer. Those were your hands. They had the balm, the touch for any wound. The day you died, so did the lawn. The poodle trees held on as long as they could—probably for me. But we all just missed you so damn much! Your hands!🥀

You never gave up on anything you loved, not a plant or a person. Even the little runts, you’d say, “It will grow when it’s ready. It just needs more time.” I think I’m ready. I’m blooming🌸🐣

Happy Heavenly Birthday Mom! Or as Kevin & I call it “Happy Rose Day.” It was your name and your favorite flower. WE MISS YOU. I still get lovesick when I see dimples. I miss the forest section in our house. Annoying. But my oxygen levels haven’t been the same.

Today I’ll be thinking on all the good times—our dances together, watching old movies, rollerskating in denim jeans… You confronting my bully, until that one day you made me confront them. Still got bullies btw. But now I stand tall. Most of all, I’ll remember the times you’d bust in my room at 2 in the morning to pray, or call me just to pray because “something in your spirit wasn’t right.” Yeah, they’ll never be.

P.S. I know you’d be mortified that a picture of you eating is on the world wide web. But you’re so darn cute in it! Feel free to haunt me later. I love you. Catch you in my dreams!🌹🕊️ by @themodelgeek
