Pleased to announce “Eternal Current,” the forthcoming album by The Modern Folk! Perfect for those late nights that turn into early mornings…curlicues of smoke and warm blankets. Check out the Bandcamp to hear “Harvest Song” and consider pre-ordering the record! Some words from Modern Folk ringleader Josh Moss below:

“The Eternal Current is always flowing; creating art of any kind is tapping into it, attempting to feel it flowing by and discover your place in it. In order to tap in, we set up w/ engineer Rob Vaughn in beloved Portland bar/venue Turn Turn Turn late at night while it was closed. The space was in limbo, ownership on the verge of being turned over. We had played so many shows there, it is a ground that is both comfortable and hallowed; the current constantly flowing through its doors during decades of near nightly shows featuring acts from across the world. Over the preceding months we had been developing an ‘unplugged’ configuration of the band, inspired by the MTV series and the Dead’s Reckoning album, that allowed us to play live in a wider array of circumstances, and that’s how we sat down to make this record on that Tuesday night.

Flat-picking as opposed to fingerstyle, bass instead of percussion, pushing our acoustic sound so it could persevere through full lack of amplification, like a jug band on a corner or a pre-industrial family playing from broadsides in their parlor. Attempting to swim in the tradition of music as a behavior of the human species, beyond genre or form, simply something to be doing. Doing is doing whether you’re playing or you’re hearing. In practical terms we recorded each song twice and the second take of each one ended up being the best, with the exception of three fully improvised pieces, which were necessarily first time/last time, finding music that was already there, somewhere. Rob captured that and took it from editing through mastering, and that’s what you hear when you listen to Eternal Current - a brief gauging of the meanderings of that current which vibrates in everything” by @themodernfolk

I’ve been looking forward to sharing this one for awhile! “Swanke & Moss” is now available on Bandcamp.

Last August, after opening for Sir Richard Bishop, Josh and I rode the post-show glow back to his basement and recorded a handful of improvised pieces for guitar, dulcimer, and synth. Those sessions became this tape.

Josh is one of my favorite musicians and I’ve admired his music for a long time so I feel pretty lucky to be releasing our second album as a duo out into the world.

We are also playing at Specks Records in Portland, OR this Sunday 8/30 at 11am for Ambient Sunday and celebrating the release of this tape. Come hang if you’re in the area! Thanks for reading this far and thanks for your support. ✌️ by @themodernfolk

Time for some shameless self promotion on my LP account. It’s about records and tapes that I love and unfortunately I love my own records. This one was born out of band practice recordings, cut live to four-track cassette then compiled, selected, edited and lightly collaged to create an album. It’s a good representation of everything we are up to as a band - folk song interpretations, improvised jams and spontaneously composed songs, tape manipulations, and a handful of tune-tunes. I originally released it digitally and it was a bit longer, so it is re-sequenced for the physical format. The full thing is of course still out there! Unlike most of our records I did all the art on this one. I stand by everything we’ve committed to wax, each shows a facet of what we can be. This one is more from a documentary angle; in other words it’s lots of footage but even more editing. We are proud of it and hope you might dig it.

Thanks to the band (Austin, Trevor, Bethani and Zack) for jammin’ on it, I Heart Noise for putting it out and to Ben Price for mastering it

Eternal Current

An eternal current vibrates in and flows through everything

The top of a mountain lies on the bottom of the sea

Nothing ever ends, things only change

Things which have always been known are constantly being discovered

The course of a river is a never-ending meander

Playing this spooky season banger later this month at Wyrd Hut. Emmet Martin will be joining me to form the MF Electronic Ensemble and close out a bill featuring Debacle Records label mate Spiritual Exit and the great Golden Feelings. Should be a chill night.

Please repost this, share it, tell yr friends, etc.

Next Wed Sept 30 @turnturnturnpdx is a killer acoustic show featuring:

Johnny Bell (@johnny.bell.sounds) out of North New Mexico - banjo innovator and explorer, pushing the boundaries of the instrument. New album out on @centripetalforcerecords has been getting rave reviews. If you caught @kelbyclark at Turn Turn last year, you won't want to miss this!

Lucas Gunn (@lucasgunn12 ) recently released his solo debut "You Should’nt Try To Barrow Other People’s Skin." on @carbonjoetunis and @feedingtuberecords_rozztoxart Records and has been touring hard the last few months supporting it, also getting excellent press!

Josh "J" Moss (@themodernfolk) is doing a solo set - coming out soon on @tentative.power Records is his full band's newest album, "Eternal Current" (pleased to say I was involved with that one.)

Nate Wallace (@heartsofstoke) and Anna Verlet will be performing as a duo!

Please turn up if you can and as asked, please spread the word! Hoping for a decent turnout for a weekday show - it'll end early so no complaining about work the next day. Hope to see you there! by @themodernfolk

The 5th Modern Folk LP “MF” is out on July 27th. Couldn’t be more thankful for this band and for I Heart Noise helping it come into physical existence (it’s been out there digitally for awhile). It was all done (mostly) live to 4-track cassette. A patchwork of our sounds. Old folk songs, new jams, hazy interludes and rock’n’roll. It all means a lot to us. Thanks to Ben Price for the excellent mastering work.

LP is only $15 - link to pre-order in bio by @themodernfolk

Today marks four years of @themodernfolk’s seminal Modern Folk One LP. Still one of the deepest releases in the entire WH catalog, featuring barks from a beloved canine companion, and ultrasound heartbeats from J Moss’s daughter, still nestling within the womb. All this wrapped perfectly against TMF’s trademark explorative, zoned out guitar. Always searching, always recording.
