To celebrate Black History Month, we’re #HonouringOurCommunities and shining a spotlight on some of the communities and collectives that created spaces for Black LGBT+ people to connect, organise and support one another! 🖤✨

In 1981, Black lesbians and gay men in London came together to form the Gay Black Group, building on separate groups that had been meeting to share their experiences and support one another. In response to the challenges faced by Black LGBT+ people, including racism and exclusion within the wider LGBT+ movement, the group campaigned for a dedicated community space.

Their efforts led to the opening of the Black Lesbian and Gay Centre in 1985. The Centre provided advice, counselling, a telephone helpline, a library and social space, helping Black LGBT+ people access support, build connections and find a sense of belonging.

The Gay Black Group and the Centre are part of a wider history of Black LGBT+ communities coming together to create spaces where they could be heard, supported and celebrated. This Black History Month, we honour the people who built these communities and the lasting impact of their collective organising!

This Black History Month, we’re highlighting some of the communities and collectives that created spaces for Black LGBT+ people to connect, organise and support one another.

In the early 1980s, the Black Lesbian Group was formed in London, becoming one of Britain’s earliest documented Black lesbian organising groups. Emerging from the wider Black women’s movement, the group created a space where Black lesbians could come together, share their experiences and have their voices heard.

Creating this community was itself a powerful act when Black lesbians could face exclusion or invisibility within both Black community spaces and the wider LGBT+ movement. The group’s legacy is part of a much wider history of Black LGBT+ organising in the UK – from support networks and community centres to conferences, cultural groups and campaigns for equality.🖤✨

October is here, and with it we celebrate Black History Month – a time to honour the achievements, resilience, rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black communities, past and present.

The theme of #BlackHistoryMonth2026 is ‘Honouring Our Communities’, and this year we’ll be exploring the Black LGBT+ community spaces and collectives that have helped shape Black queer history in the UK. From spaces that provided opportunities for connection, creativity and celebration, to those that offered support, activism and a sense of belonging, these communities have played an important role in creating and strengthening Black LGBT+ life.

Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting some of these spaces and the people who brought them to life, celebrating their histories and the communities they helped build. Stay tuned as we explore #BlackQueerHistory and honour the Black LGBT+ communities that have helped shape our collective history. 🌈🖤
