This was a meditative painting and as I was adding line work I saw a bird. Then I saw another bird and suddenly all the birds appeared.

I guess that's what happens when you're a bird nerd. So if you like birds follow me because you will see birds on my account.

We dropped our eldest off at college for the first time. It's hard for a parent.

I am processing it and needed time to meditatively create. Just paint on paper and lines.

Where would you put them?

I just added three 4"x4" original pieces to my collection. These are mounted on wooden panels and perfect for small spaces. Thinking shelves, table tops, small wall nooks.

I think the hardest part of this painting was limiting myself to using only the supplies that came in my September Sketchbox.

Still life isn't something I do often but I had a reference photo (📸 Denise McQuillan) that fit the color palette.

I don't love it, but it was fun to challenge myself and have fun. What have you done to challenge yourself lately?

When I think "vintage", my mind goes to mushrooms. Maybe it was the mushroom themed cannisters we had when I was a kid.

What do you think of when you hear the word vintage?

The September @getsketchbox is vintage themed with wonderful watercolor pencils, fine liners and walnut ink with this toned mixed media paper.

I painted this a few years ago. It was part of an alphabet series where I was using alliteration to guide my inspiration.

Therefore Zombie Zebra, or Zombra, was born. What other zombie animals would be cool?

This is one of my favorite pieces. I get a lot of comments on it at art markets.

I get it though, it may not be your home decor style. Which is why I just released a sticker! So if you want to know where to find it, you know where to go.

What bird is so common where you live that you kind of take it for granted?

For me it's the dark-eyed junco — a backyard regular I stopped really seeing until I sat down to paint one. I started this piece on my patio, soaking up the last bit of summer, while the juncos hung out with me.

I am in love with this goofy snail.

I painted him to bring to Art On the Ave tomorrow (Sunday, August 9th). He is one of many mini originals I will have.
