Social media can make us feel like we’re not what a mountain biker looks like. We’re too young or old, too heavy or skinny, too slow or uncoordinated, too new…

But if you ride bikes on dirt, you belong.

That’s what a real mountain biker looks like.

Here’s your daily reminder that most of what you see on here is not real. Well, it’s not what reality looks like for many of us. We’re fed a constant stream of shiny new bikes ridden by attractive young people. That’s great for them, but mountain biking is way more diverse than what we see on here. Don’t fall for the marketing. You belong with us.

Just my opinion. But some of us need the wild for the peace it brings. Everything else in life is already about productivity and optimization, sometimes we need to be where all that pressure is gone and it’s just cranking on dirt.

Do you remember this ad? @patagonia was not saying to never buy a jacket again, but to think twice, because there are real environmental implications when we over consume as a society. That message is still true today.

Sometimes we really do need a new ride but it’s not as often as we are lead to believe by all the marketing. Ride what you have and enjoy the hell out of it. Learn to fix what you can.

Support the brands that give back and that produce bikes meant to last for decades.

I get it, the sport has always been about pushing limits. Hell, it started with people sticking moto parts onto beach cruisers and racing down hill. But the sport is way more than huge whips and guys sending A-line. There’s room for everybody.

There are so many benefits to riding: community, cardio, fresh air, strength, and yeah sometimes sending huge kickers—but we need to make sure our feeds are showing the full spectrum of what riding looks like.

So if you’re new to the sport, just know there are plenty of us who like to take the scenic route and would be more than happy to do a loop with you.

This is happening a lot. People compare their bikes or their trail times or their bodies and it ends up stealing their joy. Have you experienced this?
