Deep browns, almost-black greens and warm terracotta. I love the unusual combination of colours and the wonderful detail in this vintage artwork.

We’ve given it plenty of breathing space with a generous neutral mount and paired it with our Fenleigh frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Drop Cloth.

I think the softer framing works beautifully with the richness of the artwork, allowing all those lovely colours and details to take centre stage.

And it’s a combination that would sit very happily alongside natural linens, old wood and warm, earthy interiors.

Portraits. A bit like Marmite. You either love them or you hate them!

And I am very firmly in the LOVE them camp. ❤️

I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think an old portrait can bring so much character to a room. A face from another century, a little history and, quite often, a fabulous outfit!

This rather splendid gentleman is John Woodyeare, painted in 1787 by Gilbert Stuart, one of America’s most celebrated portrait artists.

I’m particularly taken with his turquoise waistcoat and that wonderfully unimpressed expression. 😂

We’ve paired him with our Marwood frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Treron. I love how the soft green picks up the colour of his waistcoat.

So, where do you stand on portraits? Love them or hate them? I’d genuinely love to know!

A little frame admiration… 🌿 An original vintage botanical illustration by Keika Hasegawa, dating from 1892–1905, recoloured and remastered in beautiful pale pink and soft, muted green tones.

Framed in Pantalon, with its beautifully beaded edges bringing it all together.

Did you know we make our own frames?

When you order a framed print from Musée Home, we don’t simply select a ready-made frame from a supplier.

Every frame is made by us, here in our Nottinghamshire workshop.

Simon cuts the solid wood moulding on our Morso machine, then each frame is glued, joined, filled and sanded before we begin the hand-painting process.

It’s a lot of work, and certainly not the quickest way of doing things, but it means we have complete control over the quality and finish of every frame that leaves our workshop.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way. 🤍

The beauty of a portrait landscape. 🌿

We tend to think of landscapes as wide, sweeping views, but there’s something rather special about one painted in portrait format.

Instead of drawing your eye across the horizon, a vertical composition encourages you to look upwards, following the trees towards the sky.

They’re also wonderfully useful in interiors. Think narrow walls, little alcoves, the space between two windows or anywhere a traditional landscape might feel too wide.

This beautiful woodland scene is Musée No. 218.062, framed in our Marwood frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball De Nimes.

A lovely reminder that landscapes don’t always have to be landscape!

One of those paintings that makes you wonder about the story behind it.

A woman standing on a windswept beach, basket under her arm, looking out towards the sea. Is she waiting for someone, or simply taking a moment before heading home?

I love the colours in this one. The soft blue of her shawl, the sandy shoreline and that wonderful grey sky. Nothing particularly bright, but so much colour when you really look.

We’ve paired Musée No. 583.170 with our Sorrell frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Treron. The muted green is a lovely companion to all those weathered coastal shades.

And for today’s flat lay, a few old treasures gathered around it. Because beautiful things don’t always have to match to belong together.

Another little parcel leaving the Musée workshop. 🤍

This one is Musée No. 286.196, a beautifully simple botanical print in our Mapleton frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Mouse’s Back.

Every frame is made here in our Nottinghamshire workshop, from cutting and joining the wood to filling, sanding and applying the paint by hand.

And then comes the final job. Making sure it’s carefully wrapped and packed, ready for its journey to its new home.

It’s lovely to think of all the different homes our frames end up in.

A quiet moment, captured nearly two centuries ago.

I love paintings that give us a little glimpse into everyday life. Here, a woman stands before her mirror, adjusting her hair, completely absorbed in what she’s doing. It’s such a simple scene, but there’s something so lovely about it.

We’ve framed Musée No. 351.267 in our Sorrell frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Pantalon. The deep, earthy green works beautifully with the muted colours of the painting.

And I love the idea of a portrait like this in a bedroom or dressing room. It feels exactly where it belongs.

I love the richness of this 1875 flower still life by Adolphe Monticelli. Those wonderful, deep reds and golden yellows feel just as at home in an interior today.

We’ve paired it with our Marwood frame, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Pantalon. It’s a beautiful earthy green-brown that picks up the darker tones in the painting without competing with all that colour.

A good reminder that a frame doesn’t always need to be neutral. Sometimes a little colour makes all the difference.

Remember yesterday’s artwork? Well, here’s its rather lovely partner! 🤍

We’ve taken the colours from this beautiful old illustration of decorative pottery and used them as the starting point for this week’s mood board.

Dusty blue, warm terracotta, deep plum and reddish brown. Such a gorgeous combination, particularly when you start mixing in a few patterns.

I love how the blue brings out the warmer tones in the artwork, and how the different fabrics work together without everything needing to match.

And that’s what I love about starting with the art. Sometimes the colour scheme for an entire room is sitting right there in front of you.

Both prints are available individually, but I think they’d make a particularly lovely pair.

A little something different for Thursday. 🤍

I love the detail in this one. The beautifully decorated cup, spoon and plate, with all those little patterns and touches of Smokey blue, aubergine and terracotta.

It’s the sort of artwork that would look lovely in a kitchen or dining room, particularly alongside old pottery, painted cupboards and a few collected treasures.

We’ve paired it with our Sorrell frame, hand painted in Farrow & Ball Drop Cloth. The warm neutral keeps the framing simple and lets all that wonderful decoration take centre stage.

A little colour for Tuesday! 🐟

I love these old natural history illustrations, particularly when the colours are as wonderful as these.

Three rather splendid pink and red fish from Histoire Naturelle des Poissons, with all that lovely warm, aged paper around them.

We’ve framed this one in our Auden frame, hand painted in Farrow & Ball De Nimes. I think the blue-grey works beautifully with the pinks and reds, and it’s a combination I’d happily use in an interior too.

Who says old art has to look old-fashioned?
