a bit about the piece from Nate:
“‘for Mary - a journal of devotion’ opens a window into the private world of Frances Willard. Willard was a prominent social activist in the 19th century, serving as the president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union from 1879 to 1898. Through decades of public life, she championed a wide range of causes, including temperance, prison reform, and women’s suffrage.

Much of Willard’s private world is documented in her 50 volumes of journals. for Mary sets entries from 1860 and 1861, which center on letters to and from Mary Bannister, some sent, some seen by no one. These letters communicate a devotion that moves from friendship into romantic love and erotic passion.

The music focuses on this desire, their intense passion for each other, and their feeling of wanting something they can’t have.”

SOLSTICE CHOIR: a two-day open participation choir
June 20-21, culminating in a performance on the longest day of the year with the incredible @transchorusla

couldn’t be more excited about our first larger pop-up choir experiment. we’ll be running back some favorite arrangements to celebrate one year of new choral music and new connections. featuring a new original piece by @thenatebarnett, original arrangements by @asherbl_nk, and a piece by @ericwhitacre. gonna be special!

Do you have creativity that you hide?

I have come to believe that the human need to express creativity *is as vital as breathing*

I have also observed that significant impediments to expression live within most people, myself included.

Among them: fear of others' judgements, fear of our own imperfection, a feeling that it's not worth sharing our creations when there is so much readily available professional art.

I've written poetry since I was a kid, and I've got books filled with it. I've almost never shared it because I'm afraid it isn't good enough, but I'm starting to think that's not a very good reason.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of joining with my class of Whiffenpoofs to sing a short concert at our class reunion. Though I perform often, rarely is it filled with so much memory and meaning. Of course it’s especially great to sing in such a beautiful, resonant space.

I’m welcoming new students into Barnett Music Studio!

Over the last 13+ years I’ve worked with hundreds of music students in workshops, classes, choirs, orchestras, musicals, and private lessons. Each time has been an opportunity to discover the innate musical ability that each person possesses. It’s been a space to deepen the relationship to our bodies, our ears, and our creative identities. In this next season of life, I’m expanding this work and offering it more widely.

Students can be of any age and have any level of experience. You can want to sing, write music, to play piano, learn music theory, or work with me to design your own course of study.

The most important thing is that we’ll be developing your connection to your voice, in all the ways we conceive of it.
