Before Cook Inlet Housing Authority (CIHA) purchased and renovated what is now known as The Nave, 3502 Spenard Road was the home of Lake Spenard Baptist Church. During renovations, the building's vintage stained-glass window (facing Spenard road) had to be replaced with new glass, though we kept the new design as similar as possible to honor the building's history. But for the original glass itself, that wasn't the end of the story. We knew the vintage, textured glass was irreplaceable and precious, so we kept the pieces in careful storage within the basement of The Nave for years. In 2024, we saw an opportunity in telling the story of how The Nave came to be. CIHA commissioned local artist Emily Longbrake to repurpose and reimagine the original Lake Spenard Baptist Church stained glass. This installation is a special tribute to The Nave’s past, present, and future. It features vibrant, flowing patterns that honor the original window, while infusing the design with fresh botanical motifs to honor the land and all who gather here. Chin'an, thank you to Emily Longbrake and all at Cook Inlet Housing Authority who supported bringing this vision to life.
Next time you visit The Nave, be sure to venture to the downstairs hallway to view this beautiful piece in person!

✨ Still Sound

📍 November 15 — @spenardjazzfest at @thenavespenard

I created Still Sound for a special @spenardjazzfest Pulse & Presence day at @thenavespenard , bringing together amazing musicians from Anchorage for an exploration of sound, rhythm, and musical connection.

The project explores the meeting of jazz improvisation, musical traditions from Portugal, Brazil, and Cuba, and American classics through original, unexpected arrangements. The music moves between intricate interplay, rhythmic exploration, and moments of spaciousness, finding new ways for familiar melodies and diverse musical traditions to speak to one another.

And we’re bringing it back!

So happy to keep exploring this music with these incredible musicians. Hope to see you there! 💜

The magic of Art Fair is hard to describe unless you visit in person, take time to engage, and pause to let the moment reach you.

Sometimes I get fixated on French knots, not gonna lie. They’re so gratifying to make. These little knots and many more are going to be at The Nave Art Fair this weekend in Spenard, Saturday and Sunday, 11am -4:30pm. I’m bringing big art quilts and little art quilts and more. Come say hi! The building is going to be full of amazing art and artists! Can’t wait!
