THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM. The Ed system is lost right now.

This is a post from last school year that went viral on TT, but I had to take down because I got in trouble. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Now that I’m no longer in public schools, I can speak more freely. Last year I worked in an elementary school that invited all high support needs autistic students in the district to the same classroom. The school had sensory rooms, extra support, and different spaces to support autistic students.

🚨The problem?
The lead SPED teacher and paras had little to no training in teaching autistic students. They may have been trained in deescalation, but not how to teach and support neurodivergent students.

👉Here’s the thing: schools can throw in all the fidgets, sensory stools, and sandboxes they want, but those are tools, short term solutions, a bandaid in my opinion. What ALL teachers need, ESPECIALLY SPED and GenEd teachers, is training. Holistic understanding, and opportunities to understand the neurodivergent student’s point of view. Without this, schools are causing harm to upwards of 1/4 of students (depending on a variety of factors).
Neurodivergent children are not going away. They’re here, they’re smart as hell, and they desperately need proper support and understanding.

From one neurodivergent Mama with neurodivergent kids to another, we do have the power to fix this.

That _____ is scared of me….that they wouldn’t want to get in a bar fight with me… that I have “big dick” energy 😂

Meanwhile I’m over here blasting “one love,” hugging trees, and begging everyone for peace. I even wore the same earrings for YEARSSS that were peace signs and hearts ☮️❤️

Neurodivergent women are strong, but we’re also incredibly misunderstood. It’s time that changes, because we’ve got work to do 💪

World, you better look out 💪

If you feel physically sick when you witness distress in others or consume too much world news, and cry during almost every movie or drama show, this one’s for you ❤️ and me too ☺️

Your compassion is absolutely a gift, even when it feels like a burden. Feeling so deeply and having a ton of compassion for others can be VERY taxing to the body and the mind.

Allow yourself more grace than anyone has ever given you! Be the caretaker that you’ve always hoped for.

You deserve some time off (if it’s financially possible). You deserve all the extra rest. You deserve to cancel plans just because you’d rather lay low. You deserve a community that understands you and lifts you up. You deserve a job that doesn’t leave you so depleted you can’t function afterwards. You deserve it all my friend.

Please cultivate that knowing, the world needs you and your gifts now more than ever. ✨

This is my sweet autistic 6 year old last year in kindergarten. I took a video of him from my 1st grade classroom window to send to his Dad to show how much he’s struggling.

He’s alone, and he’s covering his ears because he’s so overstimulated (even outside!). He’s normally a very happy, high energy, playful, active kid. But not at school.

It absolutely killed me to watch him like this..

In my own classroom HALF of my students were neurodivergent. And even as an AuDHD educator myself, I couldn’t meet their needs as well as I wanted to because every adult around me wanted to push back. Fidgets couldn’t leave the room and go to music/PE/art class, kids couldn’t be moving while on the carpet because that’s “chaotic.”
Kids couldn’t bring anything to school that would help them feel safe.. the list goes on.

I now solely teach and coach teachers at the graduate level, and my son is homeschooled. We are building a life of peace, safety, belonging, and an absolute LOVE of learning. We are spending ample time in nature, prioritizing our health, and having FUN.

But of course, I’m the weird one 🫠 😂

I will keep advocating from the outside of the system, for my kids, your kids, and all future generations. Because the way things are now?? Is why we are so illiterate, so burnt out, and so unprepared for the world. 🌎

This is a video from my classroom window last year.. watching my sweet autistic son navigate the playground.

Beyond him being alone every single day, he was depressed. He was shut down. He was overwhelmed. He was NOT himself. Normally, he is a very high energy kid who runs, climbs, and plays HARD.

Not at school. At school he was a shell of a human. Masking so much while in the classroom that he couldn’t even find energy to play at recess.

It broke my heart 💔 and continues to break my heart thinking about all my neurodivergent students still there being forced to conform to a system that doesn’t allow them to be themselves. To learn in the ways their brains need. To move in the ways their bodies need in order to learn.

If we don’t shift the school environment, the school system WILL crumble.

It’s about time we open our minds to different ways of learning, thinking, and processing.

No more “one size fits all” approach.
