In a wide-ranging interview with The New Arab Book Club, @jeremycorbyn discusses the failure of Britain’s political establishment in holding Israel to account, the pitfalls of international law, and why the campaign for justice for Palestinians must continue.

The veteran British MP chats with The New Arab journalist @elias_jahshan about the scale of Britain’s complicity in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, and how his book The Gaza Tribunal, which he co-authored with Neve Gordon and Shahd Hammouri, is an invaluable historical repository of evidence and an urgent call for its investigation.

Francesca Albanese (@francesca.albanese.unsr.opt) the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has become one of the most incisive and vital voices of our time.

Yet in the United States, her words are rarely heard.

Major networks and newspapers either ignore her reports or label them “biased,” while political elites push to discredit her entirely. In Washington, her very name is almost unspeakable.

Across the Global South, however, Albanese’s interventions resonate powerfully. She articulates what many governments and movements from Latin America to Africa have long felt: that a new international order is emerging, one not subordinated to the West but grounded in dignity, solidarity, and justice.

In an interview with The New Arab, Francesca Albanese discusses how Palestine exposes Western hypocrisy and how the Global South is reshaping international solidarity and justice.

Three years into Israel’s genocide in Gaza, newborns are fighting for their lives amid overcrowded neonatal wards, critical medicine shortages and broken medical equipment.

At Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, just 20 incubators are being used to care for between 55 and 60 babies. Premature infants face life-threatening infections, while doctors and nurses are forced to ration medicines and use inadequate substitutes.

Across Gaza, 45% of essential medicines are out of stock, and more than 21,000 patients need medical evacuation, including approximately 5,600 children.

For newborns like Hassan, survival depends on access to medicines that are unavailable in Gaza or urgent treatment outside the territory — options that remain severely restricted.

Medical staff continue to fight to save lives with dwindling resources, while families face the unimaginable fear of losing their children to conditions that could otherwise be treated.

Every Exit Brings You Home, Naeem Murr’s new novel, encompasses many themes and story arcs, but one of its key elements is the role that memory plays: From what the characters actually experienced vs. the myths they tell themselves to survive.

In the latest episode of The New Arab Book Club, Naeem Murr elaborates further on how some of this plays out in his book - his first in 20 years since The Perfect Man, which was longlisted for the 2006 Booker Prize.

Every Exit Brings You Home evolves around Jack and Dimra, both of whom are from Gaza, and their neighbours in a Chicago condominium building, it explores what it means to find—and make—a home.

When playwright and director Sînziana Cojocărescu began working on the play ‘The First Year (of the Gaza Genocide in the Media)’ in 2023, she could not have imagined that the genocide in Gaza would be ongoing three years later.

Hamas’s attack on 7 October 2023 was quickly presented by mainstream media in the UK and beyond as the starting point of Palestinian-Israeli history, with every depraved act of Israel’s genocide in Gaza reported as being committed in retaliation for, and in relation to, that attack.

This recalibration of history was the impetus behind ‘The First Year,’ which, in its world premiere run at the New Diorama Theatre in London, digs up this flimsily constructed timeline of violence and challenges establishment media’s obfuscation of facts.

“The idea for the show came incredibly early, as soon as the genocide started, really,” Sînziana tells The New Arab of the play’s origins.

“I saw how people who, before 7 October, might have said, ‘Oh yeah, it’s a shame what’s happening in Israel and Palestine, it’s so complicated,’ suddenly had it all simplified for them. The way the media reported 7 October and the genocide after that almost took the issue off the shelf for them. They didn’t have to think about it, because they were helped to make up their minds. This made me think about the huge responsibility the media has in shaping public perception and, basically, enabling genocide,” Sînziana adds.

The play’s all-Palestinian heritage cast enact some of the most farcical instances of reporting we saw in the year after 7 October 2023.

“I think the play is a hard watch, and it should be a hard watch, because it basically clarifies and sharpens an image that has been blurred in the media,” Sînziana says.

‘The First Year (of the Gaza Genocide in the Media)’ runs until 10 October at @newdiorama Theatre in London.

Three years of Israel’s genocide, destruction and displacement in Gaza have left vital medical records lost or inaccessible — from cancer biopsies and treatment plans to pregnancy histories, vaccination records and medication lists.

With Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure and health information systems severely damaged by Israel’s ongoing attacks, including paper files and electronic servers, the lack of effective centralised databases is making it increasingly difficult to follow patients over time and transfer their medical information between healthcare facilities.

Doctors are then increasingly forced to make critical decisions without access to patients’ full medical histories.

‘Cotton Queen’ is a Sudanese coming-of-age story set in a cotton-farming village, where teenage Nafisa finds herself caught between tradition, modernity and her own growing sense of independence.

Drawing on Suzannah Mirghani’s (@suzannahmirghani) childhood memories of Sudan and her research into the history of cotton and British colonialism, the film explores women, memory, tradition and the continuing effects of colonialism.

Speaking to The New Arab, Suzannah describes the film as bringing together her childhood memories and her adult research: “So the film is really taking two tracks. On the surface, it’s a happy, light-filled, enchanting story. But underneath lurks a very harsh reality.”

At the centre is Nafisa, part of a new generation questioning both tradition and modernity.

“It’s about picking and choosing what is good rather than simply accepting everything – the good and the bad.”

The film also looks at how cotton’s colonial history connects to the present through the introduction of genetically modified seeds and new forms of dependence.

“That is where the colonial history of cotton becomes connected to the present, and colonisation actually keeps going.”

After the war in Sudan forced production to move to Egypt, Suzannah says the decision was difficult, but ultimately necessary: “I’m still sad about it, to be honest. But you have to make compromises in times of war.”
