When you hear 'Tuscany,' everyone pictures the exact same photograph: Florence, Pisa, or a row of cypress trees and a vineyard in the background.

While that classic view is very real, it only makes up about a tenth of the region.

Tuscany touches the sea along its western edge, climbs into the Apennines in the north, and drops into an extinct volcano in the south.

Yet, none of these landscapes end up on the postcards you queue to buy in a packed souvenir shop. These are real, untamed places just waiting to be explored.

Swipe to discover them.

We're not going to tell you to skip Florence, Pisa or Siena.

The Uffizi, Piazza del Campo in Siena, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the walls of Lucca that you can cycle around on top of. San Gimignano with its beautiful skyline.

If it's your first time in Tuscany, go and visit them - they're famous because they're extraordinary.

Just know that there is more to see.

You could spend a week here and never leave the sea.

The coast starts up in Versilia, where Forte dei Marmi is, runs down past the Bolgheri vineyards, and ends in the Maremma, the wild southern stretch with Castiglione della Pescaia and Monte Argentario.
Pine woods almost the whole way down, and a climate mild enough that the season lasts far longer than people expect.

The railway follows the entire coast.
You can enjoy it all of it without even renting a car.

Tuscany also has islands.

Elba is the largest, boasting a rich history as the island where Napoleon was exiled. Giglio Island is smaller, famous for its pristine waters and the charming walled village perched on the hill above.

Then there is Montecristo—yes, it is a real place, Dumas didn't just invent it! Today, the entire island is a protected nature reserve, meaning you need a special permit just to set foot on its shores.

Those white peaks in August aren't covered in snow.

The Apuane in the northwest are white because of the Carrara marble underneath, the kind Michelangelo came to choose himself.

The Tosco-Emiliano Apennines along the northern border have chestnut woods, wolves, and Abetone, where Tuscany go Tuscan countryside at sunset: a gravel road lined with cypresses leading to a stone farmhouse among golden rolling hills. Seven days before the wedding her finance said he was getting cold feet. Eighteen months of planning. Thirty guests with flights booked. A honeymoon already paid for on the Amalfi Coast.

She went anyway. Put her sunglasses on and threw the party. In her words, she dodged a divorce.

Turns out she'd spent eighteen months planning a party to celebrate herself.

Katherine when you find the right match, we’ll plan your wedding in a corner of Tuscany you definitely haven’t discovered yet

In the meantime we can plan an unforgettable trip just for you. Grooms not included.

There's the Tuscany everyone has already seen, and then there's the rest of it.

The whole region, coast to mountains, most of it with no queue in sight. We build trips across all of it, ready to book or made from scratch, with a guide or on your own. Six things we find kinda chic about the Tuscany off the beaten path. Swipe.

Hot springs, cooking classes, hill towns, small wineries, gravel roads: a New Tuscany off the beaten path, all year round.

#newtuscany #travelintuscany #hiddentuscany

A Tuscan cooking class is only as good as the person teaching it.

The recipes worth learning here were invented by people with no money: bread that had to last a week, soup made from water and wild greens, sweets built out of almonds and honey because there was nothing else in the house. At home you'll be able to cook them for the people you love, and they'll appreciate it more than any souvenir you could have brought back.

Saturnia is the one everybody has heard of, and it earns the attention. It isn't the only one.

Tuscany is full of hot springs, and plenty of them have no ticket office at all: this water leaves the ground at 43°C and runs straight into a river, for free.

Bring a towel, go early or go late, and don't plan anything demanding for afterwards. The good ones change with the season, and knowing which one is worth the detour in October rather than in June is most of the skill.

You already know San Gimignano, Pienza, Montepulciano.

Tuscany has hundreds of hill towns, and the ones with a hundred residents work differently: one bar, a church, and a piazza that belongs to whoever gets up first. You can walk the whole place in ten minutes, and by day three the bar knows your order.

We use villages like this as bases, not as photo stops. Sleeping in one is a completely different trip from driving through it.

Most people arrive knowing just the most popular Tuscan wines, like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Bolgheri.

Tuscany has 11 DOCG and 41 DOC appellations, and the ones your friends have never heard of are made in small hillside cellars, by growers who pour it themselves and tell you exactly what the weather did to that vintage.

Thought you were a foodie, but you've never heard of a sagra?

Let’s fix that.

A sagra is part food festival, part village party, part time machine. Every summer, small towns across the Maremma set up long tables in the piazza, fire up the grill, and open the doors to anyone who shows up hungry.

The whole village is the chef. Everyone else comes to eat. And somewhere between the second plate and the live music, you stop feeling like a tourist and you feel like one of the locals

It's called Casa Museo di Monticello Amiata, and it's exactly what it sounds like: an 1800s farmhouse frozen in time.

The fireplace still in its place. The stable. An animal-powered olive press. And the family accounts scratched directly onto the wall — original, untouched.

This isn't a reconstruction. It's the memory of a community that, in the 1980s, started bringing their own family objects here so they wouldn't disappear with the generations.

There's a Tuscany most itineraries skip entirely.

A barrel room carved 50 metres into the rock. A cylinder that landed on a hillside. A building that disappears into the Maremma. Five wineries. Five architects. All in Tuscany — three in a region most people drive past without even stopping.

Forget your classic cornetto and cappuccino ⬇️
Easter morning in The New Tuscany is a savoury one.

It's called guastare la Pasqua"ruining Easter." The tradition says the blessed egg belongs at lunch. In Maremma, it rarely makes it that far.

On the table: capocollo thickly sliced by hand, hard-boiled eggs blessed at Saturday's vigil, and schiaccia di Pasqua — an Easter bread made with ricotta and aniseed baked right into the dough.

None of this is an accident. The capocollo was butchered in January and cured for exactly three months, timed to be ready on Easter Sunday, the first official cut of the year. And the aniseeds in the bread? The perfect digestive folded right the loaf — because whoever designed this breakfast knew exactly what they were doing.

After weeks of Lenten fasting on legumes and salted herring, this table is a deliberate, joyful celebration of the senses.

These days, most Tuscan Easter mornings are sweeter. But in a handful of villages across the New Tuscany, this savoury tradition is still very much alive, and tasty.

31 km through the villages that tourists aren’t talking about yet ⬇️

Massa Marittima: Medieval hilltop town crowned by San Cerbone Cathedral. Stone streets, Romanesque arches, valley views. No crowds.

Prata: A tiny village clinging to a hillside. Pastel houses stacked like a postcard. So quiet you can hear the wind in the olive groves.

Tatti: Stone hamlet surrounded by forest. Population: 200. Visitors: almost none. The kind of place where locals still stop to chat in the square.

Roccatederighi: Perched on volcanic rock. Medieval tower. Panoramic views that stretch across the entire Maremma—rolling hills, olive groves, and endless sky.

This is the New Tuscany. The one you won't find on every Instagram feed.

Paolo, the fisherman who protects the Tuscany sea ⬇️

In Tuscany, there's a place born to protect the sea and everything that lives in it. It started with a dream — stopping trawl fishing from destroying the coast. The place is called "La Casa dei Pesci" (The House of Fish), and the man behind it is Paolo Fanciulli.

Paolo grew up on the fishing boats of Talamone. He watched the nets come back emptier and emptier. The seabed torn apart by illegal trawlers. The posidonia vanishing.

In 2006, he started lowering marble blocks into the sea. Then those blocks became works of art. Artists from all over Italy offered their talent to help protect the coast. And it's thanks to Paolo, those artists, and everyone who's supported his project over the years that today the coastline off Talamone is shielded by an underwater museum.

This year, Paolo was named one of 33 visionary people whose work and dedication are driving real change in the world.

And we couldn't be happier to have him as a guardian of the Maremma coast. Because a place isn't just a location on a map — it's the people who live it every single day. To hear Paolo's full interview, follow the link in bio.

Guess what it is ⬇️
Of course it's an espresso. What else would you have after lunch?

This one's served in a village hidden in the place we call New Tuscany. Not the Tuscany where you queue and elbow through crowds for coffee, but the one where you sit down, have lunch, and savor this little wonder in peace.

Do you drink an espresso for an afternoon kick?

☕ Drop a ☕ if you're in or tell us: how do you take your coffee?
