At 11am on Monday 12 May 2025, from the Eastern balcony of the Overseas Passenger Terminal with the backdrop of the Sydney Opera House, @tafensw Fashion Design Studio presented our 26th The Innovators independently for the first time.

Just 8 weeks prior, we made the choice to continue the legacy of The Innovators as a launch pad for some of Australian Fashions most well known designers, valuing the responsibility to our 2024 graduates and current students to ensure this opportunity was kept alive for their future.

Feeling the weight of those that had gone before and the need to push into a new paradigm that prioritises the environment, ethical design, digital innovation and local manufacturing we co-launched @thenextgarde a targeted incubator program designed to propel The Innovators into the global arena with support in advanced technology, financial management, local manufacturing, business entrepreneurship and media training.

We are proud to be nurturing the next generation of designers who are not only creatively fearless but deeply committed to building a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry in Australia, with this year’s collective made up of @eidanceilidh_ @fra66ment @soh.label and @shiyo_label

Thanks to our Innovators partner @redken, make up direction by @themakeupwardrobe and @sydneytafehairbeautybarbering , our Next Garde supporters @itsclo3d @wacomanz @leaf.comms Belle Marc and Andrew Cuccurullo, as well as our incredible producer @laraincevents and musical genius @tactilemusic who all contributed their artistry to making this happen.

Tate Boswarva is an emerging Australian designer and founder of ATTÈ, a label defined by material experimentation and textile artistry. From her studio on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Boswarva constructs one-off fabrics using laser-cut denim meticulously hand-laid into new circular formations, cyanotype-dyed silks marked by molten textures, and water-soluble bases stitched into negative space to create lace-like structures.

Manipulation of material feels both scientific and sensual. Techniques such as natural dyeing, flocking, screen printing, and custom beading crafted from contraception blister packs, balances precision tailoring with raw edges and deconstructed silhouettes. Hand-blown glass is pushed beyond adornment into garment form, to reveal a practice grounded in process and innovation inspired by the natural colour palette of the environment and reflecting her commitment to ethical and expressive design.

Conceptual yet wearable, ATTÈ creates garments that explore the body as both architecture and canvas.

Oliver Parry is a form of entertainment. A connection, not a combatant, devoted to the ritual of dressing. His practice explores hereditary fashion, where garments become inherited gestures of creation and decomposition. Rooted in severe craftsmanship and monumental conceptualism, Oliver Parry treats fashion as language spoken through cloth, textiles, and transformation. He believes that a true artist bleeds for their work, that creation demands devotion, and sometimes a quiet kind of sacrifice. Design is movement, it’s ritual, it’s obsession.

Oliver Parry’s signature of buried fabrics, experiments with textures and stains, seasonal natural dying and a playful exploration with the body and the way the world touches it, leads to the ambition of making every stitch, every cut, every collection a small ceremony, to make people feel, to make them see and to douse upon their bodies.

Oliver grew up with his house-cleaning mum, watching her turn care into ritual, every detail perfect, every gesture for someone else’s delight. She was someone who kept her beautifully illustrated tarot cards hidden in her top drawer beside her bed, which Oliver would stare at, waiting for his own reading one day. The concepts for his collections are born from accumulations of psychic readings gathered over the years of his life. This process is combined with the practice of collecting fibres from previous owners and transforming them into garments which are naturally dyed, deconstructed and reformed into something entertaining.

We are still recovering from an incredible show last week at @afcaustralianfashionweek showcasing The Innovators: @thenextgarde and could not be prouder of these four amazingly talented graduate designers who launched onto a national and global stage, following in the footsteps of some of Australia's greatest names in fashion, in our 27th year of presenting our designers during Australian Fashion Week.

Their tenacity, creativity and joy was felt by the entire audience as they presented collections that showcased their artistic craftsmanship and considered ideas with true authenticity.

This Wednesday, four emerging designers will showcase their work on the runway at @afcaustralianfashionweek at the @fdsfashiondesignstudio and @tafensw The Innovators runway.

From innovative techniques including reverse appliqué and laser cutting to material reuse and experimentation, where reclaimed, donated and deadstock materials are reworked into new garments, the runway highlights a new wave of design thinking shaping the future of Australia’s clothing industry.

We’re thrilled to introduce Luke Rutherford-Durney, Oliver Parry, Tate Boswarva and Zoe Markopoulos as they take to the runway.
