๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 21!

๐Ÿ‘— In this episode, I chat with Alana from Alanamation and Coen from Grey Cult about their flash-inspired, Y2K-style dress-up game Zolana: Girl Galactic. You play as Zolana, a space-faring fashionista determined to save Earth's individuality and style when a conquering alien race, the Uniforians, arrive intending to impose their drab, conformist attire on everyone.

๐Ÿ’… We dig into the "Fashion Battle" mechanic, matching Y2K-inspired outfits to themes like Sporty, Romantic, and Edgy to outscore rival commander Una, and designing a scoring system that rewards genuine self-expression over "optimal" dressing. Alana and Coen also share the journey from an original university prototype to a collaborative project between Alanamation and Grey Cult, and how the narrative shifts depending on whether Zolana and Una end up as fashion rivals or fashion friends.

๐Ÿ† Zolana: Girl Galactic is proudly featured as part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, spotlighting the best independent games from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 20!

๐Ÿป In this episode, I chat with Rebecca Kerr from Western Australian studio Unnatural Freaks about their cozy, story-driven sim Silver Lake National Park, a companion piece to their earlier title The Last Werewolf. You play as Ranger Logan, a werebear who secretly runs a sanctuary for supernatural folk, hidden in plain sight as an ordinary national park.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ We dig into managing the park, repairing trails, hosting campfire chats, and building relationships with visitors and locals, while balancing Logan's own inner struggle to stay in control. Rebecca also shares how the game continues the thread of mental health representation that ran through The Last Werewolf, moving from the "Wolf Meter" into a new way of exploring what it means to let people in without losing yourself.

๐Ÿ† Silver Lake National Park is proudly featured as part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, spotlighting the best independent games from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 19!

๐Ÿ’พ In this episode, I chat with Nic Taylor, solo developer behind Game Quest: The Backlog Battler, an arcade hack-and-slash that answers a brutally relatable question: what if the games you never play could come back to attack you? Nic connects the game directly to your real Steam library via the Steam Web API, and the twist is savage, the more you paid for a game and the less you've played it, the harder it hits you in combat.

โš”๏ธ We dig into the design behind spectator games cheering you on versus unplayed "immortal royalty" looming over the arena, building enemy types around real metadata like Metacritic scores and DLC support, and what it's like being a solo dev handling everything from combat systems to community management. Nic also shares the reaction from outlets like PC Gamer, Polygon, and Kotaku, and what's coming as the game heads toward Early Access.

๐Ÿ“Œ Game Quest: The Backlog Battler will not be part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, but Nic is continuing to build and grow the game's community ahead of its planned 2027 release.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 18!

๐Ÿถ In this episode, I chat with Sze from Melbourne-based DDmeow Games about their neon-drenched cyberpunk roguelite Cyber Paradise. You play as Hayley, a skilled hacker-warrior who teams up with her dog DDmeow to revive Mini-the-dog digitally, battling monsters manifested from the fear and sorrow of the deceased in a world where reality has been exposed as a computer simulation.

โš”๏ธ We dig into the heart of the game: real-time roguelite combat mixed with deckbuilding, the mechanic where petting your dog parries attacks and deflects projectiles (yes, really), Turbo hit streaks that make you super fast, and the cosy cafe hub where you uncover the backstories of the patrons around you. Sze also shares the emotional core behind Mini's story, the optional Cosy Mode for story-focused players, and what it's like taking a pixel art passion project from demo to PAX showcase favourite.

๐Ÿ† Cyber Paradise is proudly featured as part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, spotlighting the best independent games from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 17!

๐Ÿง™ In this episode, I chat with Jason, Nicole, and Raven Stark from Disparity Games, a family-run indie studio out of Noosa, about their witchy life sim Toil & Trubble. You play as Mistress Toil, fresh out of Witching school and sent to the sleepy town of The Nook with one job: brew potions to keep the residents happy and healthy, with the help of an easily-distracted piglet named Trubble.

๐Ÿท We dig into training Trubble to sniff out hidden magical ingredients while balancing his wants against your own, the real consequences of getting a brew wrong (a foot fungus tonic gone sideways is no joke), and untangling the secrets and relationships woven through The Nook. We also talk about what it's genuinely like running a "family fish and chippie" of a game studio, working together since 2011, and how Raven's role has grown from teenage artist to core creative voice on the team.

๐Ÿ† Toil & Trubble is proudly featured as part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, spotlighting the best independent games from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 16!

๐Ÿฆ In this episode, I chat with Mark Smith, solo developer at Perth-based Monster Shop Games, about their old-school action-arcade game Pie in the Sky, where you play as an Australian Magpie on a mission to spread havoc, cause mayhem, and grab the occasional unattended piece of food. We talk about the very Australian spark behind the idea: getting swooped one too many times and deciding to turn the tables.

๐ŸŽฎ We dig into the "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater in the Sky" pitch, building combo-driven aerial gameplay rendered in glorious retro PS2 graphics, designing six levels inspired by iconic Australian locations, and what it's like being a hybrid artist-programmer running a solo studio. Mark also shares what the Perth indie dev scene is really like, and how Pie in the Sky landed 100% positive reviews since launch.

๐Ÿ† Pie in the Sky is proudly featured as part of PAX Australia's PAX Rising showcase 2026, spotlighting the best independent games from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Welcome back to Behind The Game, the series where I sit down with indie game developers to talk about their craft, their process, and the games they're pouring their hearts into! This is Episode 15!

๐Ÿˆ In this episode, I chat with Martin Binfield, director at Brisbane-based Abandoned Sheep, about their quantum puzzle adventure Schroฬˆdinger's Cat Burglar, sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive reviews since launch. We talk about the story behind Mittens, a cat burglar who gains the power to be in two places at once after a heist gone wrong lands her in the middle of a quantum experiment.

๐Ÿงช We dig into the "Portal with cats" pitch, designing puzzles around Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, building both single-player and local co-op experiences with drop-in/drop-out play, and the studio's strong focus on accessibility from day one. Martin also shares what it's been like launching a debut title, the reception from outlets like Checkpoint Gaming and TryHardGuides, and what's come with post-launch content like the recent Bonus Puzzles update.
