What makes a body worthy of admiration?

The Norm turns to @clementlouis, an artist whose subjects often possess the kind of bodies we admire, desire, and obsess over. Yet beneath their physical beauty lies something far more fragile.

Working in oil on linen, Louis paints intimate scenes where tenderness, vulnerability, and human connection unfold in everyday interiors. His figures rest, embrace, and exist, reminding us that even the most idealized bodies carry the same longing to be seen, touched, and loved.

Finitude Study I, 2025
Semi-transparent pigmented resin over reflective surface
46 × 33.5 × 3.3 cm (framed)

At the shortest wavelength of visible light, blue marks the point where perception reaches its limit. In Finitude Study I, Kohlben Vodden doesn’t paint that blue: he lets it emerge. Layered fields of violet, purple, blue and red overlap and constrain one another until an optically mixed blue appears, formed through accumulation rather than introduced as a reference. It resists sharp definition and holds the surface in quiet restraint, a blue in which clarity cannot be extended indefinitely.

Conversation With @mornevisagie & @voddenoriginal

Ahead of BLUE, we spoke with Morné Visagie and Kohlben Vodden about blue as more than a colour: a space where memory, history, light and perception meet.

For Morné, blue is inseparable from the sea, carrying stories of memory, loss, queer history and oceanic crossing. For Kohlben, blue exists somewhere between the work and the viewer, transformed through light, resin and reflection.

Swipe to read the full conversation.

The Norm Presents BLUE
Morné Visagie & Kohlben Vodden

A duo exhibition bringing two practices into dialogue.

Visagie interprets BLUE through terrain and psyche, shaped by childhood years on Robben Island, the former prison off Cape Town, South Africa, where his father served as a guard. As he puts it:

“It was the stillness that the Atlantic Ocean brought to two male lovers, sentenced to death, in the 1730s off the coast of Cape Town. It was revisiting my childhood swimming pool on the island, discovering a flock of dead seagulls floating in the water. It is the journey that many still take, fleeing war, hardship, and persecution, seeking a safe haven and hope for a better life.”

Through color and material, he weaves personal memory with collective histories of queerness, loss, and migration: work that feels tender, haunting, quietly defiant.

We’re thrilled to announce that The Norm will soon be presenting Morné Visagie’s work at AKAA – Also Known As Africa, for its 11th edition in Paris.

« The sea is both archive and erasure — a site of secrets, forgetting and remembering. »

In his latest body of work, Morné Visagie continues to explore the ocean as a space where silence, memory and the body converge. His abstract works evoke the movement of water, swimming, sinking, and the suspended stillness of being held beneath its surface.

Formes, espaces, abstractions

Form, Space, Abstraction

Moving beyond figurative storytelling, to some artists at AKAA’s 11th edition form, colour and material are the core of their practice.

Ako Atikossie explores the relationships between technology, matter and natural resources. His paintings and installations create spaces where shapes and matter seem to develop their own visual language. Ako Atikossie will be presented by GOWEN Gallery (A7).

Chez Morné Visagie, lignes, surfaces et formes géométriques composent des œuvres d’une grande précision, où la répétition et la rigueur laissent émerger une dimension presque méditative. Morné Visagie sera présenté par The Norm (B12).

Entre abstraction et figuration, Gillian Rosselli travaille par couches, gestes et répétitions. Couleur, rythme et matière deviennent les vecteurs d’une peinture intuitive, traversée par la mémoire et le rapport au lieu. “You are not the lead that entered the furnace. You are the gold that remains.”

Kohlben Vodden takes colour field painting off the flat plane. He layers transparent pigmented resin over a mirrored surface, so the colour is completed by light and by the viewer’s own reflection.

The Blue Gold Series follows Jung’s alchemical arc of lead, fire and gold, from the weight of betrayal to what survives it. It is a reclamation of power.

The Norm is pleased to present Vodden’s work alongside Morné Visagie in BLUE, a duo exhibition in partnership with @jomomadrid

Alessandro Magliani (Milan, 1992) is an artist and architect based in London, whose practice brings architectural and painterly processes into dialogue.

In response to the increasing digitalisation of contemporary architectural production, he uses digital modelling as a generative tool to shape physical form — combining clay, 3D scanning, and rendering to develop fluid, organic shapes that become the conceptual and compositional basis for his oil paintings.
