Accountability is the outcome.

Responsibility is the process.

Most people struggle with accountability because they haven’t built the systems necessary to be responsible.

Master the process, and the results tend to take care of themselves.

31.

The older I get, the more I realize how much of who I’ve become is a direct result of the people who poured into me when I needed it most.

One of the greatest gifts my mother ever gave me was making sure I had access to mentors, coaches, and men of character who helped shape the trajectory of my life.

As I worked with more athletes this year, it became clear to me that too many young men and women are trying to navigate some of life’s biggest decisions without that same guidance.

That’s why I started The Nxt Play.

My goal is simple: help athletes navigate the transition, uncertainty, identity shifts, career decisions, and life that comes after the game.

If you know a current or former athlete who could benefit from this message, share this page with them.

You never know how much a conversation, a mentor, or a little guidance can change someone’s life.

As athletes, we love the part of the story where we’re winning.

But one of our most important lessons is that eventually you have to choose your own direction.

Sports may open doors, but they were never meant to be the entire story.

Trust yourself. The same person who learned how to compete can learn how to thrive in whatever comes next.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that your passion isn’t always your purpose.

There are things in life we love that are meant for a season, not a lifetime.

For athletes, that realization can be especially difficult. We spend years pouring everything into a game, only to finally realize that game actually ends for us too.

That doesn’t mean it was a waste.

It means it was preparing you for what’s next.

Sometimes the thing you’re passionate about isn’t the destination. It’s the vehicle that develops you into the person you’re meant to become.

The question isn’t what happens when sports end.

The question is: Who are you becoming because of them?

People may forget the stats, the wins, or even the conversations.

They won’t forget how you made them feel.

The way you treat teammates, coaches, coworkers, and people in your network will open more doors than talent alone ever can.

Your reputation is built one interaction at a time.

As athletes, we’re taught to push through everything.

When you’re on the court, field, or track, the mission comes first. Your emotions aren’t always the priority in that moment.

But once the game is over, those emotions don’t just disappear.

Learning to acknowledge, process, and express what you’re feeling isn’t weakness. It’s part of being healthy, resilient, and human.

Compete with discipline. Process with honesty.

In January of this year I developed a condition called rhabdomyolysis while getting back into the gym after the two most sedentary years of my life. Easily the most pain I’ve ever experienced.

It made me realize that the body truly does keep score.

Every emotion we avoid, every feeling we refuse to process, every unhealthy coping mechanism we lean on eventually asks for payment in some form.

For me it looked like alcohol, poor eating habits, inactivity, and slowly disconnecting from myself without even realizing it.

Eventually your mind and body will force you to acknowledge what you’ve been consciously or subconsciously trying to outrun.

Take care of yourself šŸ¤šŸ’«

To all of my job seekers I know this job market is tough but I want you all to remember to be confident, competent, and remain curious! You are able to do so while showcasing your true personalityšŸ˜‚. And in all honesty people enjoy working with fun/likable people as it makes the woes of the working world that much more bearable.

Don’t hide who you are to try and fit a circle in a square peg!

Something I wish I learned earlier on in my career.

Remember that you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. You get to decide whether they are a fit for you. Best of luck to everybody on the job hunt! by @thenxtplay

1ļøāƒ£ This is your first time here and it’s ok to act like it. Allow yourself to be a beginner as you start a new journey. You don’t have to know it all at once or ever because the truth is none of us do!

2ļøāƒ£ We can only control the things that we do and actions we take to accomplish our goals. These actions may influence but they can’t guarantee our desired result. The more you do something the better you understand what works and what doesn’t and you’ll be able to adjust your inputs accordingly to increase the frequency of your desired outcome.

3ļøāƒ£ You are not your performance or your results! Good or bad they shouldn’t heavily influence how YOU feel about yourself. We do need to leverage results and value to the world in order to get to certain places in our lives but these should not make or break your self-esteem.

All jokes aside your ability to decentralize your days as a student-athlete from your identity has a significant impact on your success when it’s over.

No one is trying to take these moments and accomplishments away from you but they only represent a small part of who you are, especially after you are done playing collegiately or professionally.

Take the time to discover who you are and what you have to offer the world outside of sports!

Tip #5- Find yourself a mentor. You don’t know what you don’t know. You can’t put a price on the value of the experiences of those who have been where you are and are where you want to be.
