The dive bar has been in Oakland for eight decades. AnĀ Oakland Tribune edition dated Oct. 9, 1941, features a Notice of Hearing for a cabaret license for a place called The 2101 Club. The place appears to have retained ā€œ2101ā€ as part of its name through its many iterations. In the 1920s, the barĀ used to be a store called Hopkins Street Groceria. The bar is now owned by two brothers, Tony and Danny Duncan. They bought this bar in 2014, and Laurel Lounge, just one neighborhood over, in 2017.Ā

Richard Perez, who was born and raised in Oakland, has a long history with the Duncan brothers, dating back to when the 19-year-old Perez worked at Sportmart — a shuttered sports store in San Leandro — with Danny.Ā

He has been working in nightlife for close to two decades, and has been a bartender at 2101 and Laurel Lounge since 2018. He pulls the Monday morning shift at 2101, and the closing one on Thursdays. Then he manages Laurel Lounge on Fridays and bartends there on Sundays.

A few months ago, chatter beganĀ circulating online about the closure of The New Parish, the intimate music venue in Uptown Oakland that captured the hearts of music fans with its eclectic bookings.Ā

The building on San Pablo Avenue, which opened its doors as The New Parish in October 2009 with a show headlined by singer songwriter Alex Cuba and DJ Bobbito, already hadĀ deep ties to Oakland’s music and nightlife landscape.

ā€œIn the case of opening New Parish, I felt that Oakland needed and deserved a legit live music club, and I thought I could provide that,ā€ Michael O’Connor, the club’s founder and longtime owner, told The Oaklandside. ā€œI knew it was going to be hard. I knew it was going to be a risk. Nothing was easy. Nothing was handed to me. Permits weren’t handed to me. Money wasn’t handed to me. Everything was stressful.ā€

In the olden days, in many cultures, a person’s name could tell you a lot about them. Often it referenced someone’s trade or the family business. Or maybe it indicated where, exactly, they lived.

These days, it’s typically a delightful coincidence if something central about a person’s life, like their career, complements their name.

The late, legendary San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen enjoyed discovering and documenting these aptronyms. He dubbed their owners ā€œnamephreaksā€ and shouted them out in his columns.

We found several people in this position living and working in Oakland. Tap the link in bio to read the full story.
